Norman was barking away like mad last thursday which is when I'm now fairly sure Dorothy was giving birth.
Since the birth I have split the cage into it's two halves with Norman and Dorothy in one half and the other two girls Billie and Nancy in the other half.
Another of his harem Billie is due to birth any time and I was wondering if he is likely to know even if he's not with her? They're in one cage split in two and there is a small area where they can all see each other so I'm just wondering if he will bark while Billie births even if he's not actually with her.

its certainly an intrigueing question, only answer is to try it and see just how connected they are...
I have 3 males (had 4 once) and they have all barked on a successful (sort of) mating - now you see why i said sort of. As such i dont have any experience of mixed sex relationships in the degu world. I cant imagine its a warning/dominance call of the same type, maybe an announcement like holding up a baby to prove its healthly in medieval times?

There was no barking from Norman when Nancy birthed but obviously he was frustrated by her being in season so close by as he kept chasing and trying to hump Dorothy's babies. It only lasted a short while and he has calmed down again now.
