Hey Guys, Last night Oreo started limping, and he is not using his back foot at all when walking but he still uses it if he has to (jumping) I took him out of his cage to have a look, when he sat on my hand he had most of his weight on one leg and lightly resting the poorly one. The foot itself looks fine to me but i am not experienced, so i will be taking him to the vets later for a look as he is still limping this morning. It is not bumble foot because its not leaking puss or anything like that. I just wish he could tell me what is wrong. If anyone has any ideas it will be greatly appreciated Thanks

Do not even get me started about the vets!!! I took Oreo down to Wellpets in Yeovil because they told me that they have delt with Degus before and have a few clients that have Degus, so i thought that they would know what they are doing. Man was i wrong! the vet that i saw was called Modestas Tverskis. i took Oreo into the room and opened my carrier to get him out, Oreo was quite calm to be honest, and i held him and showed the vet his foot, the vet didnt want to hold him to examine him or anything like that, he didnt even look as if he was making an effort to pretend he knew what he was doing. he let Oreo walk around the table to see him limping, and they he started pulling on his back legs to see what was wrong, im not sure if thats what he was soposed to be doing as Oreo looked in pain as he tried to run away from him. the vet then decided to pick him up, but Oreo didnt like him at this point because he had been pulling on his legs so he gave the vets finger a nibble, the vet then dropped him on the floor from 5ft in the air onto his bad leg which may have made it worse, the door was wide open so i slamed the door shut so he couldnt get out of the room, when i turned to get Oreo i saw the vet pulling on his tail on the floor trying to get him back, he wasnt just holding his tail to stop him getting away, he was constantly pulling him backwards by his tail to get him back. i went NUTS at the vet, shouting at him that you shouldnt pull his tail coz it will come off and hurt him, the vet stood back as i bent down to Oreo, he ran straight onto my hand, relieved that i was there to save him from the bad man, i put him back in his box and told the vet (in my outdoor voice) that i am going to another vet as he doesn't know what he is doing, he just smiled at me with a horrible grin as i stormed out from the vets and took oreo home. oreo was so shook up from the event that he didnt want to get out of his box onto my hand to go back in his cage, he was scared that someone was going to hurt him again, i finally got him out and back safely and he seems fine with me this morning, but i am still very very angry at the vet! if he didnt know anything about degus then they should have told me that instead of booking me in. thinking about it know still makes me sooo angry at them, just seeing him pulling on his tail, that was the worst experience in my life! we are now searching for a proper vet that really knows what they are talking about, i am not listening to what anyone says or what they may know, they must be 100% confident that they know what they are doing. Poor little Oreo

Oh my goodness, you poor thing. And poor Oreo too.
I can't believe how the vet acted. At least my vets said they didn't really know a lot about degus when I asked them and were honest.
It is difficult to see anything in the picture although it is a very clear picture. I hope you can find a vet that knows what they are on about.
He could have sort of sprained his ankle so it may just get better on it's own, but can't be sure. I wish they could speak and tell you what the problem is, that would make life so much easier!
Keep us posted on little Oreo, bless him!

Oreo is steadily getting better. The new Vet was brilliant, i am really happy with the way she treated Oreo, very nice woman would recommend her to anyone who is in Somerset/Dorset area of the UK. I have some painkiller to give Oreo a few times a day on his food (he is a little bugger and wont take it unless it is on a treat :/ ) she also recommended that i take their shelves and hammock down so he doesn't have to strain himself trying to get up anywhere and so he can rest his leg. However, i have left their big main shelf in, so they have two big levels. so far there is no improvement on his leg getting better, he is the same as last week, but hopefully after a few more days rest he will be okay again I hope

Thats unreal about that vet! I'd of smacked him so hard, done well to keep calm there. I have a issue similar. Nosey my female degu had a fall last night. Totally my fault too i feel so bad, i left the door open and she ran ontop of her cage. About 6ft. I didnt realise i left it open untill i heard her fall. She seemed ok and was running on the floor, i put her back in n she just looked shook up. Today she is aleart but not as mobile. She seems to have a problem with her right hand when eating. Its not as mobile as usuall but she is putting weight on it and has climbed a few times today. Im wondering if it could be a sprain? She isnt on her wheel at all apart from a few steps early on she took. Shes resting allot too. There is only 1 vet round here and have heard bad things about them. Just hoping someone has an idea what it is n its not that bad. Like i say shes putting her weight on it, climbing at times and cleaning herself but seems to be having a slightly hard time picking stuff up with that hand

oooh that does sounds bad. its a shame that you do not have a vet which you can trust its weird how she is putting weight on it and jumping fine as Oreo cant do that, maby she has hurt one of her little fingers. i hope it isnt anything too serious and good luck with her, keep me posted, i hope she gets better

I know what u mean, they worry you to bits dont they? Maybe oreo needs an antibiotic. Really hope he improves soon. Nosey has showed some improvment, her hand dsnt seem to be a problem no more. But shes still not as mobile, just resting allot but she has been coming to take treats from me and seems a bit more alert at times

yeah tell me about it. Oreo is fine when it comes to trust but Oscar is a different ball game, he is such a little nightmare lol. i think thats what the vet has given me, i cant remember what its called now, but its for dogs, so i can only give one drop and that is it for 6ish hours oooh, im glad to hear she is picking up a little bit. Is her poo and wee okay? runny nose or anything weird like that? because she might have an inside infection or something if she is resting a lot, something seems to have taken the energy out of her

Yeah seems ok. Think its just the shock of the fall and maybe she has hurt herself on the way down. Its the 1st time shes felt pain too so what i been told it takes a little while for degus to get back to normal after a shock like that. Shes having a half hr eating, drinking and in the wheel. Then just rests a bit more. Shes perked up allot more than y-day so just keepin an eye on her. So whats he like today? Any better?

Yh probably, especially if she is young, she is probably being cautious just in case. atleast she is getting better day by day. He isnt getting better no he is still struggling to get around, no improvement at all. i think the vet did something really bad to his leg when he dropped him, especially because his leg was bad anyway, he probably made it worse because he isnt getting better i think i am going to have to take the last ledge out in there so there is nowhere to jump up to, and then he will have no choice but to rest it. he is trying his hardest bless him, but Oscar keeps wanting to play fight and run around but Oreo cant
