Before I start I will say that I am taking him to the vet this afternoon for proper medical help, but I just wanted to know if any of you could shed some light on HOW he injured himself like this.
Last night I picked him up and noticed there was blood around his anus. At first I panicked thinking it was coming from his anus or penis, but after I cleaned him up I noticed that it wasn't coming from either but instead there is some sort of small wound just behind his penis that was bleeding quite a lot. He seems ok and not in pain and we're keeping a close eye on him, like I said also taking him to the vet, but I am baffled as to how he could have got this injury. Any ideas?

Hi, he could gave himself a cut with his teeth when he was, well... playing with himself. One of mine did it when he had infection in his penis, he tried to fix it a lot. Or maybe the vet will have idea how it happen. Hope he gets ok soon!

Thanks both of you, I was thinking that he might have cut himself with his teeth when he was grooming down there. It's good to hear that it isn't too serious, we were really worried but I feel a lot better now.

I'm no belittling the injury and I'm really pleased it doesn't seem to be anything serious, but...only a goo could managed to bite himself whilst grooming over zealously. It makes me laugh that that the only real explanation, such charming animals, hehe!

I know, how pleasant!! UPDATE: Just got back from the vet, who diagnosed some kind of infection, either in his bladder or his penis, as there was blood and pus coming from around the base. He's been given a course of baytril which will hopefully work. Has anyone else had this same thing with their degu? How did it go?
