tanyajk85 If your good at DIY go for it. Great Idea I'd end up with a pile of wood on my floor and no cage lol I'm sure you will have a great cage built in no time. And as long as he Goo's are happy when it's done then it well worth all the effort you put in Good Luck with it if you do

oo this sounds positive! i think I will have a go enrole the father yet again with im sure he wont be happy with but he'll get over that smux - i thought the same as i remembered reading it last time i built my cage but my memory is shocking so thought i should probably just check! ha ha cheeky little goo! they are so myschevious! cazara - well im not too bad at it but my dads a joiner so that always helps! even so you should deffinatally try building your own its not as difficult as it looks and youll end up with something ten times better than something shop bought! and like you said its deffinatally worth the effort when you see them in it thanks tanya xxx

Having just converted a wardrobe into a degu cage myself, I think its a great idea!! Will try and post a photo so I can show you, when I can work out how to reduce the size pf pic. Rather than buying a brand new wardrobe, have a look on e-bay as you will probably get a stronger one than the one you are looking at and for a much cheaper price. I paid £21 and it was nice and local.

No, the sides of that wardrobe are made from 3 or 4 strips of wood all next to each other held by 4 pieces of wood, 2 at top 2 at bottom, they have ridges and 0.1cm gaps, for a degu this would be a chewing starting point. I'd also say it's a little pricey. Just go out and buy any wood, except that horrible horrible wood which is underneath that white plasticy stuff on furniture. It's all glued together. Good luck.

I have to agree! You must have people walk right past, thinking it is simply furniture, and not housing for your animals. Have you ever had someone (as in a guest) get a shock or fright when one of the rats or degus suddenly moved or made some noise?

People do walk in and do a double take now and again and it's always a good conversation starter!!

I've been on a furniture hunt and I can't seem to find something suitable as I'm wanting a nice big floor base (at least 1m x 0.5m). It's only wardrobes that I've found that have been too expensive (second hand from British Heart Foundation found one for £200!) and have the flimsy backing.
So I'm going back to original plan of building one myself I think.
