i want to make my degus their own hammock. are there any materials that are toxic for them? i would just get some mainly cotton material. would they chew through really big holes or would they like it. if it was the thickness of your average pillow case would that be thick enough or would i need to have more than one layer. i want the best for my degus but i want to make it because i can add personal touches.
thanks!

what i've used is some old or ripped jeans. i've cut them up into the shape i wanted, and then i threaded wire through it and poked the ends of the wire through the holes in my wire cage, if you're getting a wooden cage then you could always just drill some holes in the side, and poke the ends of the wire through there. My two love there first jean hammock and sleep in it every night. They put all their bedding in it as well to make it even more snuggly!

What I done was use the chest and back of a t-shirt (sort of like making a pillow but with all ends closed) Then used some long shoe laces and made an X shape under it for added support and also to strap it onto the cage. You could also leave one side open so they could go inside it. Sort of like a little cave I guess. If you wanted to make this I could make you a simple pattern.

I plan to do a bit of both of what the last two posters did...jeans material for strength, t-shirt for comfort and put a little bedding inside between the jeans and t-shirt so it *is* a pillow then make it into a sort of cave and hang it from the roof with wire (possibly threaded inside some shoelaces, my local pound shop has packs of 20 and I already know the little buggers like shoelaces :-)
I am thinking of making a large hammock like that, hung from the top and sides so it doesn't move around too much and they can have fun playing in it too :-)

so is it ok to use a pillow case? like just leave it as it is, not tie it up into a hammock.
