We now have a little boy chinchilla =] My mam got him for me for christmas as a surprise =] (we were planning on getting him before this from the sanctuary I work at) He's called Pablo.
At first the girls didn't like him, so we had to keep him in a different room...and little by little we have moved him into the room. We decided to introduce them while the girls were in the play pen (he was still in his cage but there was enough room for them to touch noses) Sandy adores him but boo's still not too sure. We are going to take him to the vets to get him checked out and see if they can tell us how old he is because we haven't got a clue. He seems really happy with all of his new toys and loves to sleep in his little cardboard tube (he hasn't worked out the hammock yet!
I need to ask a couple of questions. -How high can a chinchilla jump (as we need to know for the pen) -What is the minimum cage size for a chinnie as we want to get a better JH one. -He doesn't seem to be drinking much water (if any). I know they don't drink LOADS anyway...but it seems to be a bit strange and i'm scared incase he get dehydrated. -Can degus and chinchillas play in the same play pen together without being in the same cage? (I know putting them in the same cage isn't really a very good idea as our degus are quite active during the day as well as on the night)

He sounds like a doll!! Post us some pictures please! I hope you don't mind that I have moved this over to the Chin section. I thought you would be likely to get more responses from the members that own chins.

Yeah, not many people seem to have chinchillas on here =/ We know how high they can jump now! LOL. Here are some photos from the other day... And before anyone says anything about the plastic house and saucer... He had one at the sanctuary and it was his little hide out...so i thought if we got him one the same for the time being it might make him feel slightly safer and happier. He never chewed/chews it. And the saucer was the only one my mam could get at the time. We are getting him a JH one with the new cage. He's still a bit shy =] He's a handsome chap! Lina x

Congratulations on your new addition. As you already know plastic is not adviseable for chins as they can chew and ingest it thus causing a blockage etc .Have you considered a wooden box , I find my furrballs love them higher in the cage so I drill a hole in them and attach with a nut and bolt to the cage bars then sit them on a shelf I need to ask a couple of questions. -How high can a chinchilla jump (as we need to know for the pen) I have chins that can easily jump as high as the door handles
-What is the minimum cage size for a chinnie as we want to get a better JH one. Most people prefer a cage as large as possible width wise rather than height but JH's cages are great as they do have the various levels or you can stagger shelves and add hammocks to ensure there are no large drops that they can fall from-He doesn't seem to be drinking much water (if any). I know they don't drink LOADS anyway...but it seems to be a bit strange and i'm scared incase he get dehydrated. I would keep an eye on his fluid intake to be on the safe side, maybe fill his bottle up to one of the lines so you can what he is drinking but I find my chins tend to drink less in the colder months -Can degus and chinchillas play in the same play pen together without being in the same cage? (I know putting them in the same cage isn't really a very good idea as our degus are quite active during the day as well as on the night) Personally I would not allow degus and chins to share a playtime as I prefer to be safe rather than sorry as you just never know if the chin/s may have a go at the degus
I may be already talking to the converted but I have to mention that its best to have him castrated ( you need to keep them apart for a minimum of 8 weeks after the op as he will still be fertile )before considering introducing him to your girls honey . Would love to see pics of your little man

He is a beauty!! I just love his tiny little feet! I don't know why . . . but there is just something so cute about the teeny tiny feet of chins and degus. It is even more emphasized with chins though. What a cutie you have there.

Yeah =] he is, although he looks petrified on that picture haha. Here is a bit better one =] Chillaxed to the max =] Nah, i'm not converted susiechinchilla, i'm just checking to see if anyone else has. I want the best for my boy and my girls. He seems to be drinking a lot more now and is eating better...there is certainly nothing wrong with his pooping!!! He's been grooming me a lot and has been sitting on Andrews hand, which is a very good sign. He's really cheeky and seems ALOT happier and a totally different chinchilla since he left the sanctuary. We don't know whether he has already been neutered or not, so we are going to take him to the vets when we get the JH carry cage in a few weeks, and just making sure he's generally okay. Lina x

ROFL!! On closer examination, I do see that there are two tiny dashes that would open up to be eyes. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

Awww he is gorgeous!!! Loving that hammock!!!! Mine wont sit on hammocks, they will only do ledges. Doesnt stop me buying hammocks tho cos they look funky!!!
Chins look so innocent and sweet, however Spyro and Vespa have been out tonight (as they do every night) and Vespa spent the whole time stripping my wallpaper and Spyro busied himself with trying to eat my surround sound speakers and wires. Grrr. Dont need to go to the gym tomorrow after jumping up and down every ten seconds to chase the little horrors away from their reign of destruction.

Oh i know, the big doe eyed look always gets them off the hook. They are so naughty and get away with so much just because they are that little bit too cute to stay mad at!!
