Hi
I have 2 degus, 1 is reasonably tame and will come and climb on you when out of the cage, making him reasonably easy to put back in the cage.
The other though still runs away and wont come near us despite trying to train him with treats etc. Any suggestions on curing this much appreciated

Have you tried just sitting still by the cage and seeing if he comes out? You may have to stay there a while but it should get him slowly used to who you are and that you're not a threat.
Once he's happy with you and doesn't run away, you can start trying more. This is the way I've always treated my pets (rats and degus) and so far for me it's worked, but it does take a while.

Have tried that one already!!! The other one is straight out before you can finish opening the door, whilst this one runs to the back of the cage. If you sit there he will eventually come out but will run away from us straight away.
Think this could take a while to get him used to us.

Patience is most definitely the key... Even if you feel something isn't working stick with it. I got Ice in late December... and it's only now she will happily sit on my arm of her own free will. Every day when I feed them I'll keep the door open for a bit. Bu will always come and say hello but after the vet care she's a little more hesitant, but always happy to say hello. Ice used to hide and watch but now she's actually more confident with me than Bu is.
I wonder whether it would be easier if the more confident one was out playing while you tried to get the other one? I think Ice could have been quicker to tame if she wasn't pushed out of the way by Bu.
