well i decided i didnt want pubert on his own for two long after losing his brother , i knew pubert would be alright cause his temperment is lovely and he only puts his foot down if he needs to ;D i went and got him two little 9 week old brothers im afraid i got them from the dredded pets at home again as i was so worried i coudnt get any from any where else i looked everywhere on the net but they were all to far away , so i bought the two little boys and she put them in closed seperate boxes which i thought was odd when we got them to the car we tranferred them to a mini cage together and we nocticed that there was a ring og blood on one of their tails he had it alresdy when we had removed him from the box they gave us him in , we didnt really think anything of this we wanted to get them home quick cause of the stress on the way home i noticed the split was seperating and you could see the bone a bit anyway got him home and 2 ins of skin on the tail had came off (poor little bugger) we phoned pets at home and they said if we brought him back and he was in pain they would put him to sleep wernt having none of that so we said we would take him to the vets and they agreed they would pay ( >:(hopefully) he went to the vets today and he said he would have to put him under and remove the tail, poor little we had only got him today all this in one day (cant belive it) we was worried about them meeting pubert now we had this any way the vet removed the tail and everything went well thank god but the problem is the vet said he has to be seperated from his brother and pubert for 10 days how can i do that he will be lonely the other one is gettin on very well pubert but i fill so guilty i dont know what to do , does anyone think i should ignore the vet and put them together cause he dosent really know about goos and how they need company, i cant believe all this has happened in one day it was meant to be a happy time for them all . sorry for the long post

wow....how traumatic for the lil guy.... but!... good thing is that if you hadn't come along?.....it seems he wouldn't have received the proper care u provided .=) do you have the ability to set up a side by side situation? where they can see eachother.... & interact ......just not bother the lil guys tail while it heals?

I can't help but wonder if the P@H person caused the tail injury when she was catching them to send home with you.
I suspect having the little one separate for a bit is wise, but I tend to think that 10 days is over kill. In my opinion, 5 days would be plenty. I would definitely recommend as Phoenixm has, try to have them situated so that he is right beside the others in their cage, so they are in sight and smell of each other.

can you take a look at pubert to see if he is male or female, i know are male squeaky gets very frisky as he lives with 3 females.
if he lived with another male before, and nothing happened then by rights he should be male.
my male and female were only together for 2 weeks, when she got caught by him

Many people who are identifying the sexes of degus mistake the urinal cone for a penis, and so assume they are looking at a male. However, when a male degu is . . . undulging himself . . . there can be NO doubt as to his masculinity! Also there is a difference from male to female in the distance between the anus and the urinal cone. With females, both those outlets are so close together that they resemble a figure 8. For the male however, there is a gap between and more closely resembles an old fashioned door lock.
If you are able to lift Pubert into your hand and examine the bottom regions (sometimes a hind view while lifting the tail is helpful) you may be able to make a better determination of gender.

well im at a loss now dont know what to do, im preety sure pubert is a girl (i just cant cant believe this) they seem to be praying on her but i think they are to young at the moment to suceed ,if pubert is a girl she only wants one of the 2 males to do it to her so the other one is getting very grumpy , it will lead to fighting, they all really bonded well as well ,thought about getting the two boys done but when i looked on topia it sounds like you shouldnt do them (neuter them) till they are 52 weeks old i cant seperate them that long from pubert , the whole idea was company for pubert after all, also ive only read things about one boy and girl ive got the problem of two boys and a girl , if i could get the boys done would they still want to fight over pubert if caged with her , i really dont know what to do i really dont want to take the boys back cause of they are used to it here now and one of them went through it over his tail , i know you will all say seperate them but i havent got another cage plus that will sovle my problem in the long run has anybody on here had their boys netured early and has anybody got two males and one female together ( when i have checked pubert down below his bits are closer together ) pleaseeeeeee help

I, too, am inclined to think female. The angles of your photos make it a bit hard, but take phots of degu bits is NOT an easy task. You did well to get what you did, and kudos to you! You are mostly like right about "HER." Which clears up that question, but doesn't clear the question about what to do with their living arrangements. So . . . how about this question. Are you certain the other two are boys? Can you hold them at all yet? If you held a treat high up against the bars, would they stretch up long enough in their effort to get the treat that you could get a good look at their bits, too?

Could the boys not just be neutered? I know it is always a risk but there seem to be a lot of success stories on the site.
