I've had my degus (two pairs) in the same cage for a week, separated by an inch of mesh gap.
On the first day they made all sorts of weird low pitched warbles and squeaks that sounded aggressive and generally unpleasant.
As the week's gone on, the regularity of these swearing incidents has gone down, but they're still doing it, along with posturing and aggressive behaviour towards the opposite pair.
Their regular sand baths have had vanilla essence in it to try to and make them smell the same.
Should I wait until they stop yelling at each other before I try and get them to meet on neutral territory, or can I try and mix them briefly now and see how it goes?

Are you swapping cages daily? If not i'd do that for a bit before a meeting.

Thanks, I'm swapping them between the sides each day, the swearing does seem to have decreased, although they are still leaving an amazing amount of poo by the mesh splitting the cage. I can't make up my mind if this is some kind of territory marking, or because they sit and watch each other a lot of the time, that's where they poo the most.
