hi, i have two male degu's, Chewy Luwie and Mr Nibbles. They are around a year old now. As soon as i approach their cage to open it they both run to the door waiting for me to open it, which i love, as it makes me feel as though they want to see me!! I hold my hand next to the door which, after a while one will cum out, run up my arm and jump onto my shoulder. i guess the other goo, Chewy Luwie is shy, as he comes out when he sees Mr Nibbles is ok. But as far as trained this is it. From reading various posts on this website, i feel many owners are experiencing much more from their goos than me, which is quite frankly making me feel left out!! I have no room and too much stuff to let them run around my room, which is a downside, but would love to hear any ideas or experiences to help get more from my lovely goos!! Also, when my goos are out, i have trouble holding them both at the same tie as they do not sit still for a second!! just run up and down my arms and accross my shoulders looking for an escape route onto my bed and probably under it, if, they ever were to achieve this would result in me never finding them!! Any help or advice regarding tricks or to help me calm them down would be greatly recieved!! I have had goos before, but sadly they died at a young age of just 2, one for unknown reasons and the other sadly had a respiratory illness which resulted in me having to have him put down . Please help!!

Garden? dry days and some uncut grass and clover = heaven for my goos. Obviously they have a playpen and need a lidded one as they climb out but I often sit in there with them and play. Can you fit a playpen in your bedroom or some other room. Alot of people let their goos run around the bathroom free range. tricks wise I got my three to touch my nose for a treat... one will use his paw the other two just their noses but still its fun (for me anyway ) My degus aren't one for sitting still either unless its mid afternoon nap time, and sometimes I'll put on a film, let the cage door down, rest it on my leg and they all climb down and have a snooze on my leg. But I found that out by trial and error. But your not the only one that feels left out, I can't stroke them at all say under the chin or the usual so called favourite spots, its such an offense to them

i have tried them in the garden, they seemed to enjoy it, but did not keep them out for too long as was not sure how they felt about it, i.e being exposed to brezes n sunshine. one didnt seem to mind but every time there was a breeze the other one wud crouch down to the floor as if scared.
i have no room in my room for a playpen at all, n we have a dog and two cats in the house, therefore do not trust them in any other part of the house in case of funny scents or so forth.
i really am at a loss, as i wud love for my goos to just come out and sit on my shoulder, instead of tryin to escape and run down my back. i thought they would grow out of it as my other goo (who sadly passed away) ploded along, rather than ran at hyperspeed like these 2 kids do lol!!
they no im their mummy, as they come to my hand over any body elses, and always choose me to climb on, which makes me happy, i'd just like more.......................

I do know what your saying, but you might be surprised and find that the scents don't bother them. They don't bother mine in the slightest. Can't you shut the door to whatever room is being used and trial it using a playpen perhaps?

i have no room in my room for a playpen at all, n we have a dog and two cats in the house, therefore do not trust them in any other part of the house in case of funny scents or so forth. We have dogs and cats too. We make sure that all the animals are in the kitchen when we are cleaning them out due to us not knowing if they will escape or not. Although after saying that one of our chinchillas escaped last night and when i went to see where it had gone it was cuddled up to one of the dogs under its paw!!!! Where can you get a degu friendly play pen from as we dont really let ours out either. We have a rabbit pen but the gaps in the bars are pretty useless for a degu. I was thinking of getting some ply board and hinging some together to pen them in but they would still jump over it !

Wooden rabbit runs are fine because the wood is on the outside of the mesh.
Bar spacing for mine is an inch wide and they can't fit their heads through at all so no chance of getting heads stuck nor escaping.

how are they sooooooooooooooo trained like that??
my goos live in my bedroom as its the only place i feel they are safe away from the cats and dog. therefore i cannot let them out because my room is barely big enuff for my double bed and them. i have too much stuff under my bed, which means if i let them out, they would never come back!!
i had one bad experience, they escaped from their old cage, as it had a plastic base which they decided to chew their way out of. i had just moved into the new house, painted my room, then this happened!! they must have been out a while before i noticed as when i got to my room, paint had been scratched off of the skirting boards, and paper torn off the walls!! i was not happy, although, i could not stay mad at them for long, even if they did cause me to go out and buy a new £80 cage!! (metal this time!)
