Well . . . there they go again!! I have finally figured out that Peek is definitely trying to be top goo among our three. Reep is the top goo, but Peek is determined to upset his apple cart. It appears to me now that what happens is Peek tries to "get on top" and then in the tussle he gets bitten because Reep is the stronger and better fighter.
Yes, that means that Peek was bleeding once again.
I was washing up for bed last night when I heard a rather ominous fight, and strangely short. I ran in to find Peek hiding and bleeding. I couldn't get a good look, but I think he was bitten in the chest near the top of his right foreleg. I took him out for a while, cuddling and talking to him. I also gave the bite one shot of an antiseptic spray . . . not sure how wise that was. Then I put him alone in the other cage. His poor brother, Snug, was desperate to go and see him, however. He was frantically digging and gnawing on the bars to try and get through to the other cage. I put him in, and straight to Peek he flew, immediately settling in with him and cuddling.
Peek was glad to see me this morning. When I first took him out, his feet felt hot, where as they are normally cool. They actually got cooler the longer I held him, and by the time I put him back in the cage, they were normal temp again. So far, no swelling in the bite area.
I cleaned the one main cage yesterday, and fighting broke out once I put them back in. I think I may need to be mindful of putting a little bit of bedding from the previous change back in so that it smells like the right balance of power in there for them.
I have also formed a bit of a theory that sleeping arrangements may play a big part in how well they form a family unit. We have had some trouble finding just the right accommodation for them, many things they have out right refused to sleep in for some reason. We found a soft fuzzy thing, made for birds of all things, and they just LOVE sleeping in it, but it only fits two at a time. When they can all sleep together, they are much more congenial, but if one is left out . . . they fight more. I'm still working on how to make it work for all three. That will probably have to wait a little now, though. I'll get Peek healed up first, then try again.
We are also planning to make a joined opening from one cage into the other, so that they have twice the space for all of them to run. We will fashion a solid metal door so that they can be re-divided back into two separate cages should it be required. The joining will be post-postponed until healing is complete as well.
There ya go. This has been the most recent chapter in our "Hormonal Degus Saga." ;D ;D ;D
