I got an email advertising a dried fruit candy cane recommended as a treat for small animals including Degus! I wrote to Exotic Pets because I see this way too often. The companies who supply food, treats, etc for small animals need to be aware of the facts about Degus. I was very polite but asked them as a Degu owner to please, please not advertise dried fruits of any kind as acceptable treats for Degus. GOOD GRIEF!!

To my surprise and their credit I just received the following email!
We thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have removed 'Degu' from our suggested use for instructions on our dried fruit treats.

Dear ExoticDiet,
Please do not list dried fruits of any type as acceptable treats for Degus. Dried fruits are very high in sugars, which of course the Degu is unable to process resulting in possible development of diabetes, cataracts, blindness and death.
As a responsible Degu owner I can not let this pass without comment. For some reason many pet stores and supply companies continue to make this same mistake. I know there is very little factual information available about Degus. We Degu owners are trying to make everyone aware for the sake of the health of our pets/ companions.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Rebecca Andrew Tarentum, PA
