Does anyone know if carrot top greens are safe for degus? I bought a bunch of carrots with the greens still on them and was wondering if I could give them to my degus instead of throwing them out.

Hi Carissa!, Not sure about carrot tops and my Degu's won't chew on carrots at all, but "LOVE" Romain hearts of lettuce and was told at the pet store not to ever give any Iceburg. Tried cucumber once and was not accepted, so the Romain is their veggie of choice. I really think it's individual preference and was also told not to give anything with sugar because they can get diabetes quite easily. Guess I shouldn't have been giving them grapes and is natural sugar. "They really love them though!" I have 3 female Degu's in a Ferret cage and we have already replaced much of the surrounding area and a shelf with wood. They are picky eaters and very spoiled, so their favorite treats are the Blueberry or Strawberry yogurt dips. Really fun and get along with my cat Jade, but like to crop speaker wires "Oh My!" Another thing I will say and you will think I'm crazy, but have the 3 Degu's, 4) Dwarf Hamsers and 4) Gerbils that all reside in my livingroom. My cat is an absolute "Doll!!!" with them and is a very mindfull cat at 3 yrs. old. Have lots to talk about and love all of my babies with "All of My Heart!"
Sincerely, Lita~

Hi Carissa, Sorry I forgot to ask if you were making sure that your Degu has Timothy Grass, as it is one of their main staples next to mix seed or pellets. Mine are alway's at the ready for their Timothy, so hope all is happy at your place!
Sincerely, Lita~

Flip will not eat carrot tops at all--actually, he doesn't care for any veggies at all. He loves dandelions, though, and his favorite thing in the world are the fuzzies on the hay--he will dig until those are gone and then settle in for the rest of his meal.
