Any idea if I can give water melon seeds to my degus. I was given some from a pet shop when we ordered some degu food and I am wondering if the degus can eat them and how many. Has anyone ever used them as treats.

I tried Googling for this, and as a result I found this excellent resource I'd never come across before. It's a food nutrient database provided by the US Department of Agriculture: www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/Searching for watermelon seeds shows that they're high in fat and protein, and relatively low in carbohydrate (slightly lower than sunflower seeds). So they're probably okay as an occasional treat.

the high protein is good, but the high fat is bad, so you'll want to treat them like peanuts - very infrequent treat.
