whilst i was cooking my own dinner i had a little thought tonight...
would it seriously harm degus if they were fed a little bit of bread (with or without butter) once every now and then as a treat?..
i have a little treat bowl that my boys have that encourages them to explore the top of their cage, and ive been putting in the usual guniea pig biscuits, occasional nut, and bits of fruit and veg. Just thought i should check it wouldnt cause no harm before giving it to them to try....

unfortunately, bread of any kind is high in carbohydrates, which a degu's body will convert to sugar. if you don't mind my asking, what kind of fruit and veggies are you feeding? there really isn't any fruit safe for degus, as they all contain natural sugars that degus can't process. some vegetables are okay, while others have sugar in them (surprising, i know!). veggies like broccoli and cauliflower are fine, but carrots and corn are bad for degus.

hi, oh well nevermind i guess any left over bread i have will have to go in the bin, i thought i had just better check... as for the veggies and fruit, i give them the occasional rasin it comes in a packet of chillicilla treats that like i said i give them a very small handful once a week, the veggies i give are peas, and carrots.... its only me in my household that eats vegetables, my boyfriend hates them so their isnt normally much going spare, but my boys always sit on the top shelf and look at me when there is food around!

yeah, degus are greedy little buggers who will eat pretty much anything you put in front of them, but not much of it is actually good for them. raisins definitely have too much sugar for degus... peas, i'm not sure of, and carrots are somewhat controversial. some say carrots are high in natural sugars, others say they aren't.

Put the bread out for the wild birds.... dampening it first to prevent swelling in their stomachs. They have lots of hungry mouths to feed and will really appreciate it!

my previous degu Gromit loved peas, there isnt anything wrong with them that myself or my vet found, so they should be fine!

They have lots of hungry mouths to feed and will really appreciate it! i would do but the problem is, is that i live in a flat that doesnt have a garden area.... i would put it out in the yard nearby, but the problem is, is that the yard is also the back of a few shops (we live above a pet shop funnly enough) and i dont want the bread to attract rats.
