Hi all, did I hear that someone recommended feeding Shreddies as a treat? And that the best ones are Tesco Value because they don't have added sugar. Went to Tesco today to check and the second ingredient is sugar... so now I am confused. Are they good or bad.

I really wouldnt feed shreddies. If sugar appeared so high on the list there is definately far too much in it. Stick to anything you see is recorded with no sugar. Try bran flakes, depending on brand they are low in sugar.

there's a brand of cereal in the US called "fiber one" that is commonly nicknamed "sticks and twigs" because of its appearance... i've wondered if this would be a safe degu treat, but didn't get the chance to check the ingredients. is anyone here familiar with that cereal and whether it has sugar?

Diet I happen to eat Fiber One. There isn't sugar but there is sugar substitute - splenda I think. That should be safe since it is considered safe for human diabetics but I wouldn't feed the Fiber One for more than a snack once in a while. I fear it would give Degus a taste for sweet. It does me!!!
correction the sugar substitue in Fiber One is Nutrasweet.

eeeeww, i'll pass. i'm extremely wary of nutrasweet, aka aspartame, just from personal experience. oh well, the fewer excuses i have to give them treats the better.

I feed Princess shreddies but they are bran and the kind with no sugar added. She goes nuts over them but I have to go to a special bulk food store to get them.
