it was time to buy new food today, so i figured while i was out and about i would at least see what my options were for sugar-free pellets... what i found was a brand called "small world" that makes rabbit and chinchilla food. the chinchilla food had all kinds of seeds and fruit slices in it, and some kind of saccharasomething which sounded way to close to sugar for my comfort, but the rabbit pellets were absolutely sugar-free and available at walmart for $4 for a 10-lb bag!! i was pretty sure i'd heard of other degu owners here giving their degus rabbit pellets, so i figured at that price it couldn't hurt to try. i put a cup of the new pellets in rumble and frenzy's cage... rumble tried one pellet and seemingly lost interest. i don't think frenzy has even touched them yet. is this just finnickyness because of the change in pellets, or are rabbit pellets bad for degus?

ARGH!! this is just my luck. apparently small world USED to make guinea pig food, but nobody carries it anymore. the next closest products are mouse/rat food and hamster/gerbil food. and i get the feeling those are going to be loaded with junk also.
can anyone recommend a good brand of pellets that don't have molasses? something that's sold in the US?

Brisky Pet Products makes a Degu pellet. No sugar or molasses. They are at www.brisky.com. Hope this is helpful, Keith

hrmm... does anyone make a CHEAP sugar-free food? i can't really afford $17 for 6 lbs of food... it doesn't have to be specially formulated for degus, just a plain chinchilla/guinea pig pellet feed that doesn't have molasses.

This is my first post here. I have two female degus that I just got a week ago.
Their previous owner gave me some food from Brisky but I agree it is very expensive (even if it does last a long time).
I just bought some guinea pig pellets from Pet Valu that has no sugar listed on the label. This is their own brand of food.
I compared the label to Brisky and it is slightly lower in protein and fat (like .5%) so that didn't seem too far off.
My plan is to mix some of the Pet Valu brand with the Brisky until I'm out of Brisky.
Pet Valu is a small chain here in the US (they are actually a Canadian company). You can find their locations by checking their website ( petvalu.com)
Hope this is helpful!

thanks! the degus seem to have warmed up to the rabbit pellets, so once i get everyone into one cage together i'll start mixing the brisky with the rabbit pellets 1:1. that way i know they're getting the nutrition of the brisky pellets, but they'll last longer. :3

I buy my degu a box of rabbit pellets and have been using that for months. He doesn't seem to mind. I buy it at Wal-Mart for around 2$.
Is it okay to feed my degu Geisler Hamster/Gerbil feed? I am afraid to let him try it because they aren't pellets like i'm used to.. it has sunflower seeds and other "scary looking" items in it.. i'm not sure it has sugar or not and i've gone over the ingredients and there are no sign of sugar.

Hamster and gerbil feed isnt the best food for them, you need to buy chinchilla and guinea-pig food and mix it, taking care to pick out all the raisans! Check out www.myhomezone.co.uk/degus/feed.shtml for all the info on feeding!
