Only give it them as a treat, say twice a week?

Compare pumpkin seeds to peanuts
Nutritional Highlights Pumpkin seeds (hulled), 142 seeds (1 oz.) Calories: 153 Protein: 6.9g Carbohydrate: 5.05g Total Fat: 13g Fiber: 1.1g *Excellent source of: Iron (4.2mg) *Good source of: Zinc (2.1mg)
Nutritional Highlights Peanuts (dry roasted), 1 oz. (30 whole peanuts) Calories: 168 Protein: 4.9g Carbohydrate: 7.2g Total Fat: 14.6gFiber: 2.5g *Good source of: Magnesium (64mg)
Oh dear. I should have researched the pumpkin seeds sooner. I have been over-feeding my girls pumpkin seeds! How awful.
while I'm at it here's the info on sunflower seeds
The Nutritional Value for:
sunflower seeds 1oz
Calories 160 Carbohydrates 5 grams Protein 6 grams Fat 14 grams Saturated Fat 1.5 grams
I will have to limit the pumpkin seeds as I do the sunflower seeds.

don't give them seed mix. if they have only pellets and hay, they'll start eating the pellets. then they can have the seeds as a treat.

9___9 your degu is not going to die from having seeds every day. if that was ALL he ate for 3 months, then he could be in bad shape, but if you gave him a few seeds a day every day, just cut back to a couple times a week and he'll be okay. seeds are far from the worst thing a degu could eat, believe me.

Any idea if water melon seeds are the same. I was given some from a pet shop when we ordered some degu goods and I am wondering if the degus can eat them and how many. Has anyone ever used them as treats.

My boys stopped eating pellets when I started adding a Guinea pig mix to their food, try leaving the pellets in the cage when the seeds have gone....they soon started eating the pellets too [ I also mix their food: 1 part guinea to 4 parts pellets...that way they don't get too much of the good stuff and balance their diet] Hope this helps
