Does anybody know what I can do about this problem? The girls are the ones doing it. They have gone through two water bottles in two days. They never did it in their old cage so I'm not sure why they're doing it now. I put in a bowl of water because I'm not going to spend $5.00 a day on new water bottles. Does anybody know a way to deter them from doing this or has anybody experienced this problem?

heheheheh.....That was a big problem for me too, they would sit on top of it and nibble away, can you get some wire mesh to put around the bottle? Or try googling for lixit glass water bottle and buy one of those.

yeah, i had that problem too. everything was fine and then all of a sudden the boys discovered the water bottle was edible. lixit makes a glass water bottle (i found it in the bird section). they nibbled at the plastic bit that attaches the spout to the bottle, but then gave up. and now i have another big plastic one up and they have apparently forgotten it's edible.

Hi, erm, I don't quite understand this problem! How do the Gu's get to the water bottle? Are they not attatched to the outside of the cage with just the metal spout going in through the bars? I see you are all form the States or Canada, so maybe this is just a British thing....lol. But it works!!!

i've always had my water bottle attached to the outside, but the spacing in the bars was such that the bottom corner of the bottle was accessible between the bars - the degus would simply sit up, push their nose through the bars and nibble away.

That's exactly my problem diet. I'm just concerned now about giving the bowl of water instead of a water bottle. Do you think they will know to lap it up instead of just not drinking it and waiting for their water bottle to come back?

I had to put a bowl in temporarily while I got a new water bottle, they drank it fine, but they peed in it and buried it so

I started with a bowl of water then bought a water bottle. Everyone seemed fine with the bowl but did throw things into the water! I found a plastic water bottle that fits into a metal holder the protects the bottle from sharp little teeth. Got it at the farm and tractor store!! Will have to check brand name tonight and let you know.

The bottlel is frosted plastic with LM Animal Farms printed in red. A red cap that holds the metal drinking tube.

Our girls won't drink out of a water bottle, they have to use a bowl and we change the water at least 3 times a day. They had a bowl in the pet store, so I guess they never learned to use a bottle.

Just thought I'd mention for UK people that John Hopewell makes a bottle with a metal bottle guard on, so that the degus cannot reach the plastic part of the bottle. What's more, it's a whole lot easier than using the wire-thing that comes with most plastic bottles. There's a link to John's site on the main information page of degu world.

I use a chew guard like the one below PLUS I put a small stainless steel bowl over the top of the bottle because my girls also discovered how to chew through the cage. I got mine at SuperPet but they also sell them at Petsmart. Both stores are in southern Ontario in Canada. Here's a Petsmart link. Search for "Oasis holdguard". www.petsmart.com/ps/main.jspI hang this on the OUTSIDE of the cage, though.

We started out using the bottles, but found that they liked to chew on them. But they were not only chewing on the plastic, but also the metal tub and ball where the water would come out of. So we switched a bowl. It seems to be working. We change their water twice a day, in the AM and PM. We have a bottle, for backup. It is cute to watch them get a drink, from the water. Our female stretches almost in a "C" shape over the water, with 1 foot actually in the water. So if anybodies ask's what we think is best, to use, we tell them that the bowl works best for us.
