I was thinking either the John Hopewell or the Wodent Wheels from www.erodent.co.uk/Wheels.htmDownsides to them: The JH Wheel can be nosie and pee is corrosive. The WW is made out of plastic, which they will eat. Which wheel do you reckon I should get for them? (I have a big Chinchilla cage)

go for the JH wheel. the pee actually doesn't affect the metal of JH wheels. the bearing cover might rust over a bit, but it won't hurt the degus. the wodent wheel, on the other hand, could very well be chewed to bits in a matter of weeks. plus, degus enjoy being able to run full-speed in a natural posture on the JH wheels.

Also, John Hopewell provides great customer service. There was a fault with my wheel when it arrived, and he sent a replacement out the same day I called him about it, without even waiting for me to return the broken wheel. I can also back up diet okatku by saying that I've had the wheel for a year, with no problem with corrosion.

On the subject of wheels...has any one tried the "flying saucer" with degus? I've been wanting to get one, but the expense makes me think twice.

John Hopewell is a sponsoring link on the main website. He has been excellent in his dedication to enriching the lives of small animals. I would recommend you purchase a JH wheel any time!

I have a Wodent Wheel and indeed the girls immediately began "modifying it"!! I decided to go the distance and order a JH wheel for our next endeavor. So far the Degu Girls have gone through two and the Wodent Wheel is their third plastic type wheel. I should have just bought the JH in the first place. Lessons learned.......
edited to add the WW was quiet at first but quickly became noisy with use. I know all is well when I hear their wheel turning so what the heck. The Silence wheels are not silent either. No such thing!

Check out the JH site to see one being used. Picture your current wheel horizontal instead of vertical. The Degu runs about on the dished out face of the saucer spinning it around horizontally like a flying saucer! Sort of like a vinyl record on the old record players. Does any of that make sense?

I can't see the flying saucer wheel on John Hopewells Site? Am I getting mixed up?
I have the John Hopewell solid metal wheel and the degus love it. Definitely well worth the pennies paid for it.

silent spinners CAN be silent, what makes the noise is the 2 plastic pieces, at the seam. just press them together and tape them so two sides wont rattle against each other. it really works. dont your degus chew it up though? what about those metal mesh wheels? (not wire wheels) the mesh is pretty tight, would their tails get caught in that?

Hi Julie. Mesh of any kind carries a risk of their feet /claws getting trapped. I personally think a solid wheel is the safest option. Watching the speed my three run on their wheel, I wouldn't want them to be running on mesh.

I had to get a large metal rat wheel and to protect their feet from the metal bars and protect their tails from getting caught between them, I sewed fabric all along the inside of it so it because a solid flooring in the wheel. It takes some effort but it is worth it. You just have to replace it every few months.
