hi i was wondering if a plastic base would be ok for a cage as long as there are no exposed edges for the degu to get to and chew on or if it would just chew straight through a solid wall. thanks.

I'm not entirely sure, although I have a feeling some degus would manage chewing through a solid wall quite easily

you know the saying - better safe than sorry. while there are cages in which the metal bars go down to the floor inside the plastic base, i would not put it past a degu to gnaw a hole in the floor and escape. my last plastic-base cage had the lip on the outside, but the degus gnawed on the ledge where the base and walls met, until they had chewed a hole in the side.

Hey julie... I have two 1 month old twins and they are into chewing plastic & for that matter my fingers! I would say that a plastic based cage is a big waste of money. I purchased one myself and they have already cheyyed holes in the walls that could get dangerous VERY SOON! i would stick to all steel (metal) its safer and cheapr in the long run-
