Hi Everybody. I`m trying to find out if it`s worth buying my two degus a hammock? What are the do`s and don`ts and is it worth doing? A friend of mine has one in her degu`s cage and he loves his, but I`m not sure whether to go ahead and get one. Any suggestions?
I recently added a large Chube Tube to their cage accessories and they like that!

My 2 degus have a hammock and they love sleeping in it (often cuddling up together in it). They don't seem to chew it and I usually put some hay as bedding in the top (especially in winter). They also have a little house at the bottom of cage which they use at night. They tend to use the hammock to lay in, in the daytime.

Thanks for your reply rie! What size do you recommend? A rat sized hammock, or a ferret size? I feel the ferret one are a bit too big? But fear a rat sized one might be too small for two degus to fit onto? Knowing my two, they will either ignore it, or squabble over it! There are a good many types of hammock to choose from on eBay, but don`t know which one would be best really. Any input on this?

that's a very good question... if your cage has the space, i'd go with a ferret-sized hammock, as it's always better to have too much space than too little. but i would love to hear if a rat-sized hammock will comfortably fit 2 degus, as i think mine would really like one.

I actually got the hammock with the cage I bought for the boys. It is made from a fleece material which keeps them warm and it quiet a large size (fits both degus) I have bought a spare one off e-bay from SuperPet for Ferrets and Rats which seems to be the same size as the one I have. I do not like this hammock much as it is made from a smooth material and you can hear their feet scabbling on it. You can however, buy the fleece ones off e-bay too. Hope this helps.

Hi rie. I agree with you regarding the meterials used to make some hammocks. I think I would prefer something cotton soft rather than something that they might find slippery or noisy underfoot. I may try one of the fleece lined ones to see if they like it.
Thanks!

i'm curious, does the fleece get little threads caught in their claws? i would think that would be the one advantage of a nylon hammock.

Actually, this could be dangerous now that I think about it? I don`t think I`ll bother with a hammock to be honest because my two seem to love their nest box and prinny is always rooting around, looking for things to line her box with! Even the cardboard squares I use as litter! My two seem to have longish claws at the moment and I will remedy this by placing bird sand paper as a lining in their running wheel for a bit to see if this helps. I don`t think they got out much in their previous home so lack of attention has made their claws overgrow somewhat.

I have never seen them catch their feet on the material.

My boys love their hammocks. I had my mom make me one. Shes an upholster so she knows how to do all that stuff. She made two of them the perfect size for them. I saw the ferret ones but those take up way to much space and they aren't THAT big unless you have a group of them it would probably be a good thing to have a huge one because my two boys love to huddle up together in it!

Well, having read this thread, and having thought that the degus might enjoy a hammock since they've got the bigger cage now.... Yup, I went and bought them a hammock. Its quite a big one, says rat or ferret on the packaging, and has enough room to fit all 3 of them in it at once (with lots of squeaking and shoving to get comfortable positions!). Hopefully I'll get some nice pictures of mine snuggled up too soon....

Ive just bought mine a hammock, its a rat/ferret hammock, and they seem to like it! Taco had to give it the chew test first, and it passed, so it stays! I couldnt decide which side to have on the inside, the fleece or plastic side, after people on about them geting their nails caught in the fleece, so i went for plastic on the inside. I dont think they need the warm fleecy bit, the all snuggle together any way! Aimee

Hi there. Something like this is an example of one you can buy: click here for example of ebay hammock ....you can easily make your own, out of a fleece or something like that. This site may give you some ideas - they're for ratty hammocks but the principle is exactly the same. www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm#hammocks Hope this helps. I'd steer clear of any nylon / plastic hammocks for safety reasons. I love fleece ones, as fleece is so snuggly and easy to get hold of, this is what I use for my rat's hammocks.

No problem..... my rats' love their hammocks, but they will keep eating them, which is why they now get cheap home-made ones, not posh bought ones anymore!

Would it work to make an improvised hammock out of an old sock that has been washed? The sock is cotton...
Ideas? Suggestions?
