Here is the cage we made for my female degus. It is a vivarium with a cage built onto it. We have recently replaced all the shelves and sleeping box because they had more or less eaten the others and they were rather disgusting from being pee'd on all the time. Kat

Looks like a nice big, airy cage just right for Degus.

HI! Lovely cage. Also, did you know that you can use Japlac paint for animal cage accessories?! It is non-toxic. You need to allow 10 days or so after painting to allow fumes to dissipate, but it's a great pee-protector, for want of a better phrase..... It makes cleaning loads easier and prolongs the life of wooden shelves etc.

Hi Meg!!! I get it from B&Q - most big DIY stores should sell it. I had to ask where it was as I had a right job finding it...... it comes in a small tin but the tin lasts ages and covers far more than you'd expect. It's mostly in bright colours because it's designed to be used for childrens toys. I had a choice between signal red or canary yellow when I bought mine, so I went for canary yellow, lol. Here's the website of the people who make it: www.international-paints.co.uk/details.php?productid=110&surfaceid=24It really works. I used it for all the sleep n' ledges in the degus cage but when I got two small shelves I was impatient and didn't bother using it. I've just thrown one of the shelves away as it was all grotty from wee damage, even though it's been cleaned thoroughly regularly. Whereas the Japlac-ed ledges are still going strong. So I've learned my lesson! Everything gets Japlac'ed now. Here's a pic of my rats' cage so you can see how tasteful the colour I chose is: (The budgies are now in this cage!!) ETA: The wine rack in that pic (the bright yellow thing at the bottom!) is still in use and I've had it about a year, even though it gets covered in rat wee all the time. I use two coats of Japlac as I find this gives the best coverage.
