Another update on the creative things we come up with...
We purchased something called a "Chin-Chiller". Basically, it's Cold Stone for rodents. Our dorm room is starting to get pretty warm during the days and this stone stays about fifteen degrees cooler than room temperature. It also keeps the degus from chewing on the plastic platform. = )
In the picture, Homer is chewing on a cut up skewer stick. We bought an entire bag for $0.99. We cut off the sharp end and sometimes cut them into small pieces. It's intoxicatingly adorable when they run off with their little stick in their mouth, like a dog bone.
The degus, so far, seem to be enjoying the bag in which the Chin-Chiller came in...
Don't worry. I supervised the entire time a degu crawled into the bag. It's been a few days now, and I have no worry about the safety of the bag. But man... so cute seeing that little fatty sitting in the bag chowing down while the other's gnaw on the bottom of the bad, trying to get their share.
The last thing is this branch meant for birds. I know they will eat it, but it has lasted nearly a week, which means we got our money's worth. I love seeing them sit on the branch while chomping on it. And I love it more if there are a few degus on the branch and the branch is wobbling while they eat what's beneath their feet.
You can somewhat see that it's attached to the cage by two washers- on inside the cage and one outside the cage- and a wing nut. We're certainly going to buy another one OR try to make one ourselves.
Bird toys, definitely the way to go for degus, because birds, like degus, eat everything.
