Our Degus are producing large amounts of dust. Its all over the cage and covering everything in the living room. It is either coming from the sand in their dust bath (most probable) or the hay. Any advice out there, does anyone have the same problem. It makes their cage look a mess and is a pain when as it needs to be dusted off everything at least twice a day.

It sounds its from the sand. Buy a sand bowl with a cover to it that means when they bathe it stays in the bowl more!!

Unfortunately I have not found a good answer to the dust problem. Even more concerning I have my lap-top on the desk adjacent to the Degu Condo so I can post and work while conversing with my girls. I do keep a cover on the computer.
My husband is patient about it, but their is a fine layer of grey dust on everything in the Degu Room (formerly the Office!). I have a large Chinchilla bath house for the girls. It does create less dust than an open bowl, however my sweet little girls take their newly dusted coats up to the higher levels and roll around or run in the wheel sending the fine dust out into the air!
My suggested alternative (not very well received) is to build them their own Degu Room, or remove everything from the office and convert it to a Degu Room!!!!

I am using a covered dust bath as well. I guess it is the use of the wheel that causes the dust to come off their coats rather than the dust flying out of the bowl. Any thoughts concerning putting the bowl in once a week, say just before I clean the cage. Or everyother week.

I think they need to dust at least once a week. I watch because with the girls' dust house always in their cage they could dry out their skin too much. They seem to enjoy dusting and hiding treasures in the dust house daily. As mentioned on another thread, a couple of drops of evening primrose oil keeps their skin and coat nice.
As far as the dust, it's pretty hard to eliminate the dust. I keep a small tank vacuum sweeper (a Mighty Mite or Red Devil type) under my desk and sweep the levels of their cage once in the am and once in the pm. Keeps the dust down a bit.
