So I get my sand bath from Super Pet and the Degus would roll around all the time in it. Just recently I got something different called "Bath powder" and I NEVER see them using it. I bought a lot of it too. $30.00 worth and now I see them rolling around beside the sand box but not in it.
Just wonder if anybody knows why they would prefer one type of another? The new stuff is more fine and powdery whereas the old stuff was more gritty.

Maybe the courser sand just feels better. I've had Chinchilla Dust which is very fine and powdery. I switched to the "dustless" Chinchilla ....I don't remember if they call it dust or sand! Anyway my two used both but seem to prefer the "dustless" - I think because it is coarser. I'm glad, because now there's a lot less dust floating around in our home office.

to be honest, i don't see my degus roll around in either... i've used both kinds and they don't seem to care either way.

I bought one of the Chinchilla dust bath houses shaped like a house. Was a little larger than I had expected but I should have known better considering the size difference between Degus and Chinchillas! It fits nicely on the bottom of their cage. Both Degu Girls love to roll and bury "treasures" in the sand. I know I've seen them each roll at least once when I'm sitting with them. I leave the sand house in the cage all the time so I do have to change it at least weekly. I imagine the sand (dustless dust!) would last a good deal longer if I only left it in the cage an hour or so a day but the girls really seem to enjoy it. They also like to perch on the roof of the house.

I have been under the impression that chinchilla sand and the dust is the same thing, but i am sure i have read somwhere on here that there is a difference, and the dust can cause respratary problems? My lot love their sand bath! As soon as the fresh stuff goes in they all race to get there first to roll in it!lol

a quick "handy idea" for all.. I have my chinchillas, and instead of wasting thier dust...i use an old fish net, and strain out all the shavings, poo, & wet bedding!!
