i've never heard of sand being used, but i prefer carefresh over woodchips. it's a lot safer for the degus, not to mention more comfortable. sand might work well, though, if you're prepared for the mess when they dig around and kick sand out. i imagine it would be easier to clean because you could just scoop the mess out like litter instead of replacing all the bedding. plus they'd probably be less likely to use the dust bath as a bathroom with sand bedding.

it's kind of like clumps of recycled paper... almost all pet stores have it.

We use the carefresh also! We started with pine woodchips and I have used pine woodchips with every other pet I've had in my life, but switched to the carefresh for our little guys after hearing much good stuff about them. I do recommmend ^_^ It's less messy, absorbs better, and lasts longer as well which is nice.
I have however heard of making like a dirt/sand pen/box - a mix of soft soil with a little bit of sand to make digging easier, so they can have a place to do their natural digging, so it's like "home". Lee and I planned to make them one from before we even got them and still haven't yet :/ ..... At first it was laziness and also the fact that their first cage had no room, and now it's become more of a concern that it may be too messy..... We'll probably make one sometime though..... We were/are going to make it to cover about a little less then half of their floor space so it'll be a good large size (more natural).
^_^

cedar is toxic for almost all mammals (i don't know why anyone even makes it anymore). pine is okay, but aspen is better.

Hope y'all don't mind me butting in, being a newbie and all!
When you say sand, are you talking playpit type sand or masses of dust bath sand? Big price difference! Right now I use paper pellet cat litter for my boys, and my other furries, and timothy hay for them to sleep in... would be nice to have something that didn't need totally replacing so often though!

I use it in my aquarium, oddly enough!! Asked because I figure it'd be sterile, given the sensitivity of some fish. Would look cool too - I have black sand in my tank. I'll have to find out where it's sourced from I think - I'm going to need some more soon anyhoo!

It should be safe for them I would have thought, but it would be expensive to continually replace during cage cleaning???
And a major job to keep cleaning it I would have thought.
