It would be an interesting and if it works, worthwhile experiment. I think my girls would use a litter box as a plaything. I wish I'd tried litter training when Tanzania was still a baby and Mocha under a year old. I think it would have been easier then. I remember one of our members talking about their Degus using the different levels of their cage as bathrooms. I was puzzled because when I only had one Degu, Mocha used mostly a corner of the lower level bedding as her "bathroom". Someone pointed out to me that was because I only had one. This was true. When Mocha had the babies and I decided to keep Tanzania as a cage mate for her things changed. They pee and poop indiscriminately on every and all levels now!! Maybe if I had set up that corner with a litter box Mocha would have continued using just that spot and Tanzania would have followed suit.
ANYWAY.... I would be very interested in the outcome of your experiment should you choose to try litter training. I vaccumm the levels every morning before I go to work and every evening when I get home. That keeps the poop under control. Would be very nice to be able to clean out a litter box instead of wasting so much bedding stripping the cage every week to 10days.

i'm curious as well... i can guarantee my degus wouldn't take to a litter box, as anything that isn't nailed down is fair game for them to dig in and fling around. i wish i could even say that they use the dust bath as a bathroom, but they just go EVERYWHERE. especially while running on the wheel, which sends the poo flying through the air at mach 4... x__X

I've noticed yesterday that my boys pee in the bath dish... can't find a general spot where they poo yet though. I think I might try this with my rats though, they pee and poo in the same place all the time, I got this to work because I put their food on the other side.

"especially while running on the wheel, which sends the poo flying through the air at mach 4... x__X" Mine did that the other day, kept running then poo'd and kept running... I think he thought it was chasing him... ^_^

lol Ive offen thought about those little loo's for mine, and as ideal as it sounds i doubt very much if mine would use it for the intended purpose! Mine do tend to do their business in one corner, but they also use the sandbath/ food bowls/ me/ hammock/ to poo in/on too. I would love to try it it but i Know dammed well that they will fight over it, drag it then destroy it. Oh well, id better get the dustpan & brush again.....
