Hi, my female just had 4 babies 2 days agom I'm thrilled. She didn't even look pregnant until about a week ago! Is there any special food she can have to help with milk production? Currently I am feeding Oxbow Chinchilla Deluxe and Cavy Performance for young guinea pigs and their Prairie Delight haycubes as well. Also, when is it safe to handle the kids? They were born furry coated and healthy. The dad seems proud too. Any other advice would be great. Thank you very much.

Just make sure she has plenty of fresh water and can get to the food easily. Mocha's babies were out and about earlier than the reference book said they'd be (can't remeber that was two years ago now) I was worried they would get cold so I kept catching them and putting them back in the nest box. Should not have worried all eight did just fine. You should have separated the mom and dad right after birth so she wouldn't get bred again, unless you wish her to of course.
Degus are good parents you really don't have to worry.

Aren't the babies sweet?? We're really enjoying our new little ones. Hank & Lacey are chasing their 9 little babies around and if they get cold they carry them back to the nest.
I notice that Lacey has been drinking a LOT of water. I think as long as she has lots to drink (just as with humans moms) then she'll be fine for feeding her babes.

didn't know aboutOOps OOps, didn't know for sure she was pregnant, the girl I got them from said they had to stay together or they would be depressed. And the dad seems so proud of his kids! I'm amazed at how great their family structure is! Putting 2 bottles on the kennel as you're right, the momis taking most of the water. The babies are staying in their nest, what funny fuzzes, they have a nestbox, and the parents have put the kids behind it with the box and a Huge pile of paper towels all over the babies so you cant see them. They make adorable noise too! I can't wait to start holding them...when is it safe? You wait a week or so with rats as tey aren't born furry, but these guys are coated1 Wow! I want them to be more pliable than their parents are, they are still hard to catch. Also, anyone in upstate N.Y. area who is interested please let me know! I'm not sure what they arem or how exactly to tell boys from girls either, or when you can tell them apart...help? Thanks.
