My husband and I thought we had 3 males. Well, we found out today that we have a female that gave birth to 6 baby degus. We have no idea what to do or have any experience on whats going on. My husband is thinking about seperating one of that we thought was the male but its a female (so in turn we have 2 females and one male supposively) from the father and mother. The father just sits by the mother and just watches her. I did read that other degus help the litter. So should we not seperate them?
We do dust bathe our adult degus, is it still safe? So many questions. Can anyone help? She gave birth to them in a wooden box that is upside down insid of it. Should we get a proper inclosed bedding. Please any information would be greatful.

seperate the father after the babys have been born but put him back after the first day of birth to help out with the babys! For all the info you will need check out my info on babys deguworld.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=breeding&action=display&thread=1118235367 and browse all the the threads on babys! Dont worry about the dust bath, the parents show them how to use it As so many of our members,i was once in your predicament, and we will do anything to help and reasure

Ditto Aimeelou! I thought I'd bought a male Degu and "over-fed him". AH No!! About a month later "he" gave birth to nine puppies - eight survived. Poor "Virgil" now named Mocha had it rough. No one to help her with the babies - she ran herself ragged. Seems as though they are very good parents from the start. She was very young but attentive to her babies. "Our" babies were very precocious - out and about within days. I was afraid to move the nesting box too. Put some torn up Kleenex - tissues, paper napkins etc in the bottom of the cage and the mother will move what she needs into the box for a nest.
Hang in there. Other than removing the Dad so he doesn't re-impregnate the mom or the other female for that matter, there's nothing for you to do but keep the adults well fed with plenty of fresh water.

Here is a another really good website to find out what is going on.... www.degus.org We got a book from a different website, when we found out that Copper was PG. If you go to your search engine and type in degus that there will be a lot of websites that might be able to help you.
