I took in a rescue group of 6 girls a month or so ago and recently noticed that one of them was getting rather large - there seems to be 3 different sizes to the group and fatty-dave (female) was waddling when out for a play.
The next day she had 2 babies - she was so protective of them to the point of leaving the nest box and seeking out the other 5 degus and fighting with them. Not just shouting at them but fighting. Fatty-Dave received an injury to the side of her face and it was obvious that I was going to have to remove her with her 2 babies for a while. My main problem was not knowing how protective she was going to be and I really really don't want to hear/feel a degu bite me!
We got her separated and all is well with the little degus. She is a great Mum. However, I have a slight dilema - there are 2 babies, one male, one female. The female can return to the group with Mum, but what do I do with the male? Will he gel into another male group? If I can not get him rehomed shoudl I get him castrated?
Is there anyone here interested in the little lad - he's called Dave - in fact all my Degus are called Dave! I live in Gloucester in the UK - but can travel about a bit when going to rat shows etc.
Please help!

I've gone through three litters and I've found that you can introduce the lone male degu to another degu as long as you take your time with the introductions. There's lots of info on this website and forum about introducing degus to each other. (Males are a little more territorial so it's worth a long slow introductory period). Start asking around now to find a home for the little guy. I suggest that you keep the babies with mom and the girls until they're at least 5 or 6 weeks old since mom will nurse the pups until then. You MIGHT be able to reintroduce mom and the babies with the rest of the girls soon. Just have them share the same dust/sand bath for a few days in a row so that they all share the same scent . The other girls may help to raise the babies if Mom settles down. Have fun watching the babies grow!
