Hi. My name is Laurie. I'm new. I have a question that I hope you can help us with. It’s a long story, but we just found out that our 3 sisters, Lilly, Milly, and Nilly, turned out to be Lilly, Milly and WILLY. The only way that we found out, was Willy making an odd sound, we referred to it as “her” peeper getting stuck. Well, I saw on a website that what we described as a stuck peeper was a mating sound after the act. I looked closely, and it’s a boy! I realize that we are probably having a litter or two. Now for my question. This “peeping” took place about a month ago. Maybe 5-6 times, that we heard. Now there is no peeping at all. Do they no longer mate once pregnant? Was the sound an attempt, but neither female would go along and he gave up? I know that they are brother-sister and there could be problems. But now that the shock is over, I’m excited about babies. Is this a false alarm, or what’s going on? If age matters, they were born at the end of May, 2006. Thank You. Nobody around here knows much about my little ones. Most have never heard of a Degu! Sorry this is so long, but we are very new at this!

Hey Laurieb I'm from southwestern PA! Not much known about Degus here either.
Does sound like you may have two pregnant females by now. They are mature enough to breed at this point. You will know for sure in about two months!
I would suggest separating Willie from the girls.
It is possible they haven't taken, and if so it truly is for the better - you don't really want brother and sisters to breed. You may not be so excited about the babies once it is time to try to find homes for them either. I bought what was to be a male when in fact it was a pregnant female. She had 8 surviving puppies. I tried and tried to give them away and ended up only re-homing two sisters. The five brothers went back to the pet shop where I bought the mother and I kept one of her daughters as a cage-mate for her. I was very sad about having to return the boys to the pet shop. I did do extensive research and wrote up a hand out for the care of Degus to be given with each of the boys when they were sold. I also took all the information I could find about feeding and care and gave it to the pet shop. They were poorly informed about Degus.
