Hi i have 5 females in a cage. started of with 2 both pregnant at the pet shop and we ended up with 7 babies! so its the 2 mims and 3 daughters. the 3 daughters are now comin up for a year old. Just wondering if maybe i got it wrong and got a male in there. one of the mums is getting really big now and eating alot more. when you look at her sides and belly its not random movement like you would expect from babies but almost like a second breathing movement further down like 2 halves moving seperatly. Also i let them run around the big tray the males and females cages sit in and all of the girls go sniffing around the males cage all intersted in eack other exect one female that went mental as did the male when they sniffed each other. is it a male? sexing aint been much help. sorry for the long post.

That's a tough one but if one of the females ends up having puppies again you will know for sure you have a male in last years brood.
Why do you say sexing hasn't been much help? Took two of us, running three separate checks to separate Mocha's 5 boys and 3 girls but after checking and re-checking we were able to determine for sure which were which. You do have to gently hold onto the base of their tails so they don't curl up making sexing difficult.

Thank you for the reply and the 1 on the other post its greatly appriciated. Bassically their not the tamest of degus, will sniff around you and settle in your hand but gettin em to hop onto your hand or stay still while you have a look is near on impossible! So i have been trying to have a sneaky peak while their around the cage like when they stand on their back legs ect. kinda seems like they know what im trying to do and just hide it at all cost to annoy me! we did sex them as babies and were sure we got them right but that was our first attemp to sex any animal.

i don't know a degu on this planet that will hold still while s/he's upended and poked at. if they're okay being picked up, just wrap one hand around their torso under their arms, and hold them vertically. lift them above your head and with your other hand, gently hold their tail back so they don't curl up in a ball. you should be able to see everything pretty clearly at that point.

Right. the only one that is really ok being picked up is the *maybe* pregnant one. had her out and her belly seems pretty firm unerneath. also the maybe *boy* has had a sniff and a pop at the 2 new boys (another post) though the bars. still no babies so im maybe thinking the *boy?* is just a girl who really don't like boys!their has been a bit of mounting attempted but no one has let him/her so maybe its just dominance. The sexing thing is harder than it seems cause even with follow the peanut only nibbler( the big one) will come out the cage to let me pick her up. even trying to pick the others up is a nightmare. really sorry if this post is causing any problems. if nothing else by the weekend im going to get them all out into the living room and sex em while i change them bloody like it or not!!

Is it possible to herd them one at a time into a clear jar or clear critter ball? (well ventilated, of course) Then you could hold the jar up and check out their "bits" from underneath.

Hi this is the one reply i didnt either want or expect to be writing. Nibbler (the "pregnant" one) was on anti boitics for a breathing problem from the vets. they didnt work so i took ter back friday another vet (same place) saw her and gave her some more but said if it dosn't clear up by monday to take her in for a scan/ chest xray as it seemed like fluid building up around her abdomen hence the pregnant look.Well she passed away saturday nite quietly in her nest. So as sad as it is it kinda answers the problem i guess. Thank you with all my heart to everyone who has tried to help with this in any way. Anyway kinda welling up with tears again so again thank you all.
