I know that Aimee said that Degus can usually have about 5-10 babies in a litter but I wanted to take a poll about how many babies your Degus has had if she ever had a litter?

Taquilla had 5 babys the first time, of which 1 passed away a few weeks later. She had 4 on her second litter.

Sweetpea has had three litters - the first had 3, a girl and two boys, the second had 4, three boys and a girl, and the third had 2 girls. all survived although one of the boys from the triple has passed away in the last 6 months due to intestine problems (all my friends have them so i get to have regular updates on them all!!!)

Looking back on this thread I realize just how luck both Mocha and I were her babies were healthy and all but one survived. The pet shop certainly did not know she was pregnant - they sold her to me as a male! She had no pre-natal care. I was very careful and diligent about feeding her though I did not know "he" was a pregnant female. I handled her way more than I would have if I had know she was carrying babies.
As far as her breeding - heaven's knows. I really fear she was bred by her father. Hopefully not. All of the babies appeared to be properly formed (no bent tails ect). I have no intentions of ever breeding her myself. Sounds as though she would have been an excellent breeder. Iif the pet shop had kept her, I fear her life would have been dramatically shortened by the number of times she was bred and gave birth.

I currently have 6 pups from Cocoa born on Tuesday, and 3 pups from Yolanda born on Saturday. Today is Monday. I don't know what sex they are It can be a very busy cage. The mom's swap out, the third adult female, Pisco, is an enthusiastic babysitter. When I come home, there is a tiny little army dispering from the nest at once. It's pretty cute.
