I mean, it feels like the end of the tunnel. The treatment is finally done.
I saw like a small drop of drool two weeks ago so the vet gave me a cream (aloe Vera based) and prolonged the treatment. She thinks it was just her lips not healing up properly.
Either way, the antibio is done. P has been very unhappy about the mouth cream, but her mouth looks better and still no trace of new drool issue.
My bf and I chose to keep giving her some cream for a few days because the whole mouth not healing up was the whole reason the infection got worse. And P has been understanding that I'd kidnap her for cream, but once it's done, she gets treats.
It doesn't mean she likes it and doesn't struggle... But she still comes for the treat so I guess it's not TOO bad ? Lol.
Either way, she didn't lose any weight if the vet appointment two weeks ago (from the 'normal weight') is any clue. I might weight her again soon ish, but so far, she looks pretty great.
I'll slowly put wooden things back in the cage so they can nibble on things again. I wasn't allowed to put them back because the vet was worried she could hurt her injured mouth... But hopefully, this is the end of the whole ordeal.

I...
I barely finished writing this that P got a new mouth wound. I called the vet so we are going to have a new appointment, but the conclusion is...
She'll probably have to be under treatment for life. Aaaah, im a little bit annoyed.

I'm sorry to hear this.
I think it's good that you have a treatment protocol that works to keep things under control. It's a real shame it hasn't totally eradicated the issue.

Back from vet trip, my vet consulted with a colleague who is much more qualified in rodents (as in she went in an European school and teaches) and apparently, my degu case is a novelty to her too lol.
So the current theory is the bacteria is proliferating in the teeth sockets. Since they don't want to pull the teeth out and sew the sockets closed (and honestly, I agree that should be a last solution case) we're gonna go With disinfectant twice a day and cream.
Hopefully it'll work out. If anything interesting pops out, I'll keep you guys updated. It could always help others out to know everything. I was still given antibio to have them in hand if it appears necessary to retreat again

Hi everyone.
So my degu's infection came back and is now going to be on antibio for a long while.
I had to take her to the vet for a teeth filing (I can't see it when her teeth are too long, but we send videos anytime her symptoms are anormal.)
She came back healthy, but she is clearly in pain as she cannot finish a meadow loop bit (I never give an entire one). I have resorted to giving her wet pellets and some seeds to ensure she doesn't lose weight.
My current issue is how does one make a degu file her teeth if she has painful lips ? I can't really give her tons of wood and I leave hay every day to ensure she could do it if she wanted to...
Any tips ?
(I have to go get painkillers and will give it to her, but I really feel like if I could help out a bit on that, it'd be less traumatic for her.)

I'm sorry to say I don't think there is really a solution to this, I can't think of anything to suggest anyway.

I can't think of anything either. My only suggestion is to keep on top of the pain management. If it doesn't hurt, it can't stop P! The only downside is that it prolongs the lip issue :/

All I can advise is to leave a couple of apple sticks in the cage, hay, sunflower seeds in the shell, other nut like a peanut in the shell - when she is feeling better, she should be tempted to chew again.

Urgh... The bacteria might have grown resistant to the drugs. I have to change drugs tomorrow...
I'm worried my degu's life is going to be short if this continues...

Oh no, I'm sorry! I hope the switch in antibiotics helps dramatically.

To be honest, I think my vet sorta gave up. The receptionnist mentionned to maybe try to bring the degu to a bigger clinic at the capital.
I'm both annoyed and powerless. I really am doing my best, but it's been over six months. Can my degu survive or will she end up overtaken by an infection ? It's mostly the uncertainty that's killing me. And my degu is like living fine... Until her mouth swells.

To be honest, I contacted a member of the rescue I adopted from because I know she lives close to my parents, asking if she could house P if I come to Paris for the vet. (She accepted readily, just gotta see if we can find a cage solution.)
I think I'll be asking for a CT scans if P doesn't get better as the rescue member mentioned her degu died due to the teeth roots growing weird.
