Hi everyone
I have 2 degus and they were very happy eating p@h nuggets but p@h have changed their formula and have new nuggets now
I transitioned my degus and they’re not so keen on the new nuggets so I need to change their food again I bought selective nuggets and I gave them each one to try and they love it and kept coming back for more
I’ve added some to their p@h nuggets and they only seem to be eating the selective ones
So I don’t know if I should still transition or just give them the selective nuggets
Any suggestions? I don’t want them getting an upset stomach

I had a similar issue when I adopted one of my degus a few years ago. He had been fed on p@h pellets and hay. When I adopted him I introduced him to yummy stuff like forage and within 24hours he was back footing the pellets at me!
If they prefer the science selective ones, and you have none of the old recipe p@h pellets left, let them eat the science selective ones. I know new food should be introduced slowly, but degus do sometimes have other ideas about this.
Are they getting plenty of their usual hay?

Thank you!
I might have to just give them the selective science ones as they are refusing to have the new formula p@h ones
I had to change their hay to excel Timothy hay as they didn’t like the old hay from natures touch I think it was
I also have one degu suffering from spurs on her teeth so she’s having a surgery in a week to resolve that and she’s eating the selective science pellets so I think I’ll just do an immediate change for her atleast she’s eating and drinking okay!

Welcome to the forum, Kn12!! I've nothing more to add to what Savvy has told you. I think if they are eating it well, you might as well do as you plan above. Especially if you have one degu that is suffering from spurs. All the calories she can get in before the surgery will be beneficial for her.
I hope all goes well for the surgery. Please let us know how she is doing after?

So the surgery went well! The vet showed us the scans of her teeth and they were badly overgrown and she also has an ear infection! He said it was most likely dental disease! Poor baby! He’s given us critical care and told us to give her medications twice a day and to update him via email how she is doing. The critical care packet says 3 tbsp per kg but she weighs less than that so I was wondering how much we should give her?

Give her as much as she'll eat, but you'll have to experiment with the consistency as each degu has their own preference. I mix mine with organic veg baby food and peanut butter and it goes down really well as a stiffish paste.
Little Amber started off by eating almost a tablespoon full of the mixture because she was hungry from being at the vet all day. She currently has a heaped teaspoon (when mixed) 3 times a day, plus forage.

Ok I’ll try that Thank you so much! She’s currently resting with her sister and I’m gonna put in a warm water bottle for her to cuddle up on as I think she’s a little cold!

Put extra bedding in there as well, she'll soon cover herself over to get comfy. She'll be a bit quiet for a while as she recovers, her jaw will be feeling a bit sore and stiff as the vet will have needed to open it quite wide to get to her molars.
If you can get the mixture to the right consistency and make it tasty enough, there'll be no need for force feeding, which is a big bonus, but she may take some persuading to eat.

She and her sister loved the warm water bottle which was nice! She isn’t having any critical care like she had a few drops but not much at all and I’m worried as she’s so skinny! What can I do/ what else can I give her that she might eat? Should I worry much as it’s only her first day after surgery?

Did she have anything to eat before she went in for the surgery? If so, and she's had a small amount of CC tonight, I wouldn't worry too much. You may need to force feed her tomorrow if she still doesn't eat, but she's been through a lot today and may need to rest.
Try mixing the CC with something tasty, such as veg baby food or peanut butter (check for additives first.)

I’m not sure if she did I gave the vets a bag of her food but I don’t know if they gave her anything I’ve kept the bowl of cc in with her and she knows where it is so if she’s hungry she can get it I mixed it with peanut butter but nothing How would I force feed her? I’ve tried a towel and I feel so bad because she’s so skinny! She took her medications thank god but not her cc I’m going to let her rest for tonight- I think she’s just exhausted, she’s being very quiet and she’s whining a little and I feel so sorry for her

What meds is she on? As soon as she starts eating again she'll gain weight quite quickly.
Try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know, but she's been through a lot today.

She’s on 0.1ml of sulfatrim and 0.05ml of metacam twice a day We tried again with the cc this morning and she is still refusing so I sent her vet an email worrying about how thin she is and weak too I left the cc in with her so if she gets hungry she can always go eat It’s so hard not to worry! Especially since her sister passed away quite recently and she was extremely thin too They are 7 so quite old but I hope she makes a full recovery

I'm so glad she had the dental!! Recovery can be difficult. Does she have any nuts that she particularly likes? It might be worth crushing some of those up to see if they will tempt her.

I managed to force feed her some cc and she’s been eating vegetables by herself and some soft treats and soft nuggets too She’s still very quiet but hopefully on the mend now! My poor baby!

You are doing all you can. As long as she is improving that is the main thing, try not to worry too much.
