Hi all. Something I never thought I'd have to say. Padfoot ate a little less than an inch of old electrical tape. I think he swallowed it since I don't see any remnants. He would have had to chew it up in small pieces since its been stuck to my scale for 4 years at this point.
Do I just observe? I have no idea what to even do here.
Edit: he doesn't seem to be choking at all. He's eating sunflower seeds and is very active in the play pen.

Also, any ideas on how long it might take him to pass the tape?

Degus just don't understand the nutritional value of everything around them! It's basically plastic, so I would say to keep a close eye on him for a few days until you're sure it's all passed through him. Also, try (awkward, I know) to pick up poops you see with traces of tape in - after all, getting it out of him is one thing, but watching him eat it all over again?! Let's hope he's learnt his lesson!

MASSIVE EYEROLL!! DEGUS! WHAT was he thinking? "Mmmm . . . chewy . . . with a slight tang of . . . something forbidden. I'll eat it!"

It's definitely the forbidden thing that got him! And I doubt he's learned anything Bouncy, since as soon as I shooed him away he came running back to try to eat more...
I'll see if I can find the poop, but it might be difficult. He's eating and drinking though, so thats good!

Our standard poodle LOVES our foam earplugs . . . so even if we don't always catch her in the act of stealing them, we always know when she has been eating them because of the blobs of neon orange in her poop. Do they make neon orange electrical tape?? HA HA!!

Hahahaha, oh jeez! Silly pets!
One of our dogs growing up apparently got into the Easter candy one year (totally fine, no symptoms at all). We only found out when her poop turned shiny and glittery from the foil candy wrappers!

Just been grateful goos chew their food! I've known dogs and cats who've eaten tape-like items, and their hoomans have had to walk around after them when it later emerges unbroken......

Yes, I've often thought that rodents might actually be a lot better off when it comes to eating a bit of plastic or something like that, since the way they eat means that everything they take in will be totally chewed up first. That must reduce the chances of getting a blocked intestine, since often the way that happens is due to a large piece causing a blockage, or something like a rubber band or a piece of string tangling their guts.
It's really not optimal when it happens, of course, but at least I've learned to not freak out as much when I notice that someone has nibbled on something inappropriate. It's important to watch them afterwards, but so far (the few times it has happened), there haven't really been any ill effects.
