I noticed this morning that Gucci has peed red, and i hope you don't all say "uh that's really bad, he as a blather infection" or "OMG, He must be a girl". my personal guess is that i gave him a peanut yesterday and the red in his pee is because of the color in the shell. we pee weird colors when we have things like spinach ans red beets, too.

I had this same problem arrise with my degus, and left me very worried. However, I have since decided that as they are all healthy it is the change in diet to the Degu Farm Premium, which has dandilion head in has contributed to the darker colour urine. I have also taken into consideration that the days are getting warmer, so this is going to contribute to darker urine. Being male the urine is also more consentrated, and this will result in darker urine.
having said all this it is important to be able to distinguish between dark, concentrated urine and urine that contains blood. Keep an eye also that he hasnt wounded himself, an it is this that you have found. If I was you I would keep an eye on him for a while, see how he goes, and it should be one of the above reasons if things are ok!

You must really try to make the difference between dark, concentrated urine, and blood in the urine. Degus comme from a rather desertic region, and for that reason, drink little and can have very concentrated urine to save water. That is normal and can be linked either to a change of feed or restricted water. Still, you should check that the water bottle is not plugged and that the water comes out easily. (However, peanuts do no give degus red pee...) But if it is blood in the urine, it could be a serious condition and you should take it to a vet, whether it is a male or a female. Female degus do not have a period or blood loss when they are in heat (is this how you say it in english?) so blood in the urine is abnornal for a female as well. The reasons for that can be numerous: for both sexes, bladder infection (often with the presence of "stones" ), accidents, for males trying to mount an unwilling female a penis wound, for females, miscarriage or uterine infection, or having been mounted on to much by horny males... Other possible causes exist as well, only a vet can (perhaps) find out exactly what is the problem.
