So this is what my girls cage looks like right now.... (Complete with upside down degu because ladders are purely for decoration) - the one next to it is a standard pet planet cage. And please don't worry, none of the power cables are within little paws grasps. Wheels are out for the night, they get those in the morning!
I picked the pet planet one because it's slightly bigger than the liberta explorer, two opening doors, so easy to clean. The latches are a bit flimsy, but I'll fix this in due time.
To make the 3 storey version, I found a second hand one selling cheap locally and gave it a good scrub, checked for rust.
So it worked like this:
The bottom one is the bottom of the second hand one entirely.
The middle is the bottom of the new one, the top is the top of the new one.
We made Metal brackets to secure the bottom ones together through the bolt holes that already existed, there was a slight problem... the second hand one was an older model and the holes didn't align as we planned - but we still have the brackets there to stop the front sliding until we replace them with properly fitting ones.
Its very sturdy and doesn't feel top heavy at all. With that in mind, I plan to add 2 more full levels for them on the lower half using aluminum sheet.
I also want to make a box on the bottom, that is a bit like a burrow - with a lift off lid so they can't hide from me much. Sort of like the compartmental houses you can buy for hamsters but degu sized. And add a dig box made from a small aquarium.
The main problem I find is they like to houdini their way out - which either involves climbing up the door and on to the roof, or just dropping out of the cage to the floor.
I'm trying to make this the best home for them, after they were kept in such a tiny place with no toys so I'm open to any ideas I may have missed. I'm looking at some of the bolt on tunnels they have on the tictac wheels site and they look fun too - I can make one of these!
