Well, being degus you know they had to prove me wrong, they started getting into it again so I separated them again for overnight. Poor little choca was making her "I'm upset" squeaks.
But every day they last longer without a fight.

I think we need an updated photo of the little lady that prefers to sleep right in the middle of your palm

I posted them in the pic section along with some pics of everyone else! (but not the boys, they are grumpy today and won't come out to say hi)

There's been some bickering today in the playpen. But there's always tomorrow.

I am watching them share a wheel in the playpen right now, knowing full well that when they go in the cage they will start something!
My new plan is to wait for my next substrate delivery and do a full clean of the cage and rearrange it so it's new territory. They have so much space so it shouldn't be that anymore!

Just remember to factor in that when ALL the urine and poo is gone, and every surface washed, that eliminates all cues, which can lead to a complete reset of their relationships. While you want them to get along, you don't necessarily want to put them in a reset that makes them complete strangers, either.
The bickering you saw . . . is it basic, normal I wanted that spot, that seed, I think I need to box and then hump, feeling a little hyper, kind of degu bickering . . . or something more I don't think I like you anymore, aggressive?

It's very aggressive - extremely fast chasing. I've been intervening when its gets to the chasing stage. Its hard to describe, its not the normal chasing where one is close to the other. Its a lot faster, they slam themselves against the cage to get away.

Yes . . . I would say you are right to intervene.

Choca has had a couple of bites when it all kicked off (one to her chest, one to her side and I think she had one to her tail, they are all nicely healed now) - they get along great in the playpen so I don't think their relationship is irredeemable.

There's been no in cage bickering, so we're giving that a try today. Bryn runs up to the others and actually wees on them.

Sounds like the dominance issues are definitely still there.

All of the bickering through the divider stopped, so I cleaned the 2 sections of the cage the 5 have been sharing, and mixed Bryn's substrate in with the clean - and then I rearranged the toys and mats so it smells of everyone all over the cage and ....
its been 5 hours and they are sharing the cage happily, fingers crossed for this one.

They stayed together overnight, I saw no aggression, so they've been in since about 10pm last night (its almost 4pm now) and everything looks great.

Almost 3 days and all is well. So happy for them!
And I have good idea of how to handle incidents going forward too. I also learned a lot about the body language that precedes fights, so they taught me a lot.
I think in 9 years, I never saw Fluffytail and Stubbytail fight. Banshee and Buddy get into some silent and violent boxing (I break it up when it gets to the kangaroo kicking stage).
The girls took it to a whole new level, but they sleep and eat together now like nothing happened
