Hi all, hope all your days have been merry.
My degu just made a sound I've never heard before. I went through that list of degu sounds on degupedia (or something similar, cant remember what it's called). But none of them sound like it. I thought it was a warble but didnt sound like the recording.
Does anyone know what it is? It is a gargling sound, crossed with like a pigeon coo. A higher-toned sounding gargle. I had just given her a new toy and new treat (nettle) which she clearly was all over and desperate to devour. And I left her to it, came back 5 minutes later, and she ran away, and then enthusiastically but cautiously was making her way over. Shreaked and ran for a second, then strategically meandered behind objects to come to me, which is when she made the sound. Then made it to the door and started begging at the door for something. Wasnt quite sure what to make of it. She was jumpy, energetic, but was being keen for me to stay and then give her something. Was it a warning sound or fun sound? Don't know. When she wants a treat now she quite happily runs over and makes it clear, normally not making any sounds.
Regardless, all her sounds are lovely.

Any chance you could record it if she does it again?

That would be hard! First time I heard it and all her sounds are so quick and surprising. But I'll try for sure!

Degu sounds are such a delight, I remember so well first hearing them when I first got degus and it was one of my favourite things I can't really place the sound you mean, but sounds are so difficult to put into words. I would just say that degu noises are very expressive, so whatever type of feeling you get from it is probably close to what she means. They do make quite a few guarding, jealous type noises if someone comes close to an item of food or treasure, so it could be that, or it could be excitement if it was more to do with her coming to the door for a treat.
