an alarming topic title, i know, but here's my situation: our baby corn snake, xelly, escaped today. to keep the degus safe, we've put their cage in the bathroom (after making sure xelly wasn't there) and stuffed towels under the doors so she can't get in. but obviously we can't keep them there forever wondering if xelly will ever show up. because xelly is still so small - she's only eating fuzzies at this point - i'm sure she couldn't kill the degus. but i don't know if she could hurt them, or if they would kill her.
how safe would it be to bring the degus back out into the living room if xelly might still be wandering around somewhere?

Can you put the cage on to a table or something? would Xelly be able to get up the table leg? Even rub butter on the legs or something? I understand your concern, even if she couldnt kill them, she could certainly scare them should she get into the cage! I know how hard it is find escapees, I had a sloe worm escape a few years ago, we turned the house upside down to find him, especially as I was living at home at the time, and my mum absolutely hates snakes! We didnt find him, and thought that as we had a dog, maybe he had found him! Anyway, about a week later, early morning, there was a scream from my parents room. Turned out mum had found him, snuggled up in her jumper she had left on the side from the day before!!!
I can only suggest you do your best to secure the degus, and try a mamouth search, something I dont envy of you!
let us know how you get on!

unfortunately the cage is too big to put on any of the tables we have. i can continue to keep them in the bathroom, but i'm surprised she might still be around after a week. i'm wondering at what point do i give up and assume she's gone?

Its a sad thought to have to be waiting for confirmation that a pet is lost for good, but only you can make that decision. How about buying some plastic boards to put around the cage?
good luck meg ;D

anything too smooth for a snake to climb up. So you could rub something onto anything to make it slippy. Then you could at least use your bathroom again, and hope xelly turns up! Have you tried leaving food for her to trap her?

not yet, but we are seriously considering it. i was pointed to a page with loads of tips on capturing escaped snakes, and food traps were mentioned.

I've never owned a snake but I have had quite a few escapees and I know what always gets them is the food. Have you found any ways that your snake could have left the house? Last time Ginger got loose I ended up doing a huge degu proofing and found that there were holes in either side of my bedroom walls leading to opposite rooms. Whatever you end up doing I really hope you find xelly in good health! And I know that it can be extremely hopeless at times when trying to find a small pet but don't give up!

i doubt xelly could have gotten outside, as our front and patio doors are well-sealed and the only other exit is a window which is locked at all times. there are no holes that i know of, at least leading from the inside to the outside. we have had bugs from outside get stuck in the tube leading to our water heater, but they've never been able to get out of the tube, so i doubt it can go the other direction. i'm almost positive she's simply curled up somewhere sleeping, and we have many places left to check (such as the huge laundry pile in the bedroom).

It's been a few days since you lost Xelly. Did you happen to find her? I hope all is well.

no, not yet. she never touched the fuzzy mouse we left out - it died after a couple of days. we haven't heard so much as rustling plastic from her moving around, so either she's lost in the closet and not hardly moving, or she's just gone. though i have heard stories of lost snakes turning up after 6-12 months. but i'm not optimistic about her chances for survival... she's just a baby, after all. we can continue to leave water bowls out so she at least has someplace to drink (if she is still wandering around the apartment) but other than that, there isn't much else left to do.

I feel so sorry for you. I was thinking about getting a corn snake and while I was out looking at cages for him I ironically bumped into my darlings. Never give up hope. My sisters hamster got out of the cage and it turned out he never left the room his cage was in, curled up under a chest of dawers. If you can just find some planks of wood to put around the cage of the degus that would be fine. Furnished wood would be best, but hope you find Xelly soon!
