what happens is if a degu is caught by the tail, they will spin around. there is a ring around their tails close to the base, and when they spin the skin separates at this ring, and the skin then peels off allowing the degu to escape. once they're safe, the degu then chews off the exposed tail between vertibrae, and it heals over into a stump. i imagine this hurts quite a bit, but not as much as being eaten.

One of mine only has half a tail because of this. His tail was caught in the cage door when the retailers were cleaning his cage.

I have a Degu with half a tail, they normaly loose the furry tip, but i have never heard of them loosing their whole tail. Heres a pic of him being shy for the camera!
