Hi there, I wonder if someone has any answers for me. One of my degus is about 3 years old and over the last 2 weeks has lost an alarming amount of weight and has become doddery and very snuggly with us but not so much with the other degu. Her eyes also seem quite sunken. She is eating well and doesn't appear to be drinking excessively. I've always been careful about not feeding her sugar. The other degu is fine and looks healthy and well.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I am very worried about her.

Sounds like your girl needs to see a veterinarian. Unfortunately your description of rapid weight loss, doddery (confusion?)and lethargy does sound like diabetes. Her condition could also be attributed to an infection of some kind where she has become dehydrated. It does appear as though she needs to be seen right away - none of us here on the board is truly qualified to give health advise. We can only go on what we have experienced or read about ourselves. Small animals health deteriorates rather quickly. I wish I could tell you not to worry she'll be ok. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Sully - how is your three year old? Any changes? Have you been able to reach your vet?

Hi there, She is doing a lot better. Has put on most of the weight she lost and is bouncing around her cage a lot more. She does seem to be drinking quite a lot though so I agree she probably is diabetic. We are keeping a close eye on her. Thanks to all.
