I just wondered if a Degu Hibernates? One of my degu has recently gone very quiet and sleeps most of the day/night (when we are a round). This is worrying me as he use to be very lively animal and friendly. This has happened over the last month (when the weather turned cold and we had to put the heating on!!). It could be the affects of the heating??? Who knows. He is still eating ok and gets up in the morning to eat his food. The other degu is fine - still very lively?

I dont think they hibernate as such, but i have noticed that as the nights are drawing in now(in the U.K) the do seem to be sleeping a little more than usual. Its funny you should mention it though, mine have took to sleeping in their downstairs wooden house rather than their upstairs nest. Maybe they do tend to "ground" for winter?

mine are starting to slow down as well. in particular i've noticed them spending more time on the top level, in the wooden hideaway, just lounging on the floor. i don't believe they hibernate in the way that bears do, but most mammals will limit their activity in the winter months to conserve body heat and energy. i plan on getting a fleece tube so my degus will have someplace extra warm to snuggle up in during the winter.

We have two degu and suddenly today they have become very sleepy to the degree that they don't respond to any noise and wouldn't move. I am wondering if there a connection to the temperature as it has been very cold today. After turning up the heating they started to move a little more but are still very sleepy. Is there some sickness that maybe causing this as well.

Even a cold degu will respond to noise and seem alert. It sounds as if yours are sick or dehydrated. I've only just logged on and read your post, which I see was 2 or 3 days ago - are they ok now?

Rhedette and I woke up this morning to find one of our Degu's (Ziq) was fairly unresponsive like this. He appeared to be sleeping in an odd place (not one of his usual haunts), with his eyes tightly closed. He's breathing, and he reacts to some handling, mostly by crawling forwards.
By some luck (for him, not me), I had to come home from work sick after only being an hour and a half away from them. He was still in his position, only now with his front paws splayed out to the sides a bit, not under his front head.
I called the vets and have an appointment for 2 (it's 11:25 as I write this). I've separated him and placed him in a carry box with lots of fresh sawdust and hay, and a small bowl of food and water. He's unresponsive to the food or water, even if brought right up to his mouth, and he won't take the water from his bottle either.
His brother (Tails) seems fine, although he's been sulking away since I separated them.
I'm waiting for the vet appointment, but it won't stop me worrying for the next two and a half hours.
He's diabetic, and had cataracts over his right eye when we bought him, so I'm worried he's suffering from something related to this.
It's a shame as we had an appointment to see the vet tomorrow afternoon for a free health-check, maybe if it was a problem we could have caught it earlier if this had happened in a few days time.
I'll post again when I'm back from the vet's, hopefully with some good advice from the vet.
