That's for the kind words guys.
Today's the first day I've been able to read this thread without crying. He's left a huge whole in our lives and Reggie is missing him very much. She is getting loads of treats and tummy tickles, but she sits on her lookout ledge where they used to meet and looks so forlorn.
Preparing one bowl of food instead of two is heartbreaking.

I have today, taken Dixie's cage down. I'm putting the spare one together for the girls, ready for Monday. I've salvaged what I can which may be of use to the new arrivals at some point, when cleaned. I've kept his lookout ledges and his ashes will go on one of them when I get them back.
His cage is past its best, and even cleaned, would not be complete as the trays were replaced with new ones from the spare one. With this in mind, I've possibly come up with a solution, which I hope Dixie will approve of. I'm going to use the panels of his cage as a trellis along the front garden wall. This way, they will not be thrown out and will, hopefully, support some really nice plants over the coming years, and will be bathed in the morning sun. Thoughts?

Sounds like a lovely idea. You could even get a memorial plant to grow up the trellis if you felt like it.

A nice climbing rose or honeysuckle!

That's an idea, but I'm not sure how well honeysuckle grows in the north east. I'm going to put ivy on a bit of it (where the kids keep sitting on the wall) and put a sign up saying 'here be spiders!'

I know I'm darn sarff but, as long as the spot gets some sun during the day, it should be fine. I've one I planted 20yrs ago. It's still going, flowers every year. It's survived snow, freezing, drought, and even the neighbourhood cats
