howdy, for some reason, all 3 of my little devils want too eat from the same dish, i have 3 dishes, i have tried even putting all 3 dishes together, but they are only interested in 1 dish, and, one of the lil devils does not like the other 2 eating out of hers, any ideas? should i speed up my plans for a bigger cage?

Just like my dogs, my Degus think each has something better or different if they have separate dishes! I now have one dish for their Degu pellets and one for hay. Tanzania can be food aggressive and lately there has been some squeeling and hissing and shoving going on if Mocha approaches the dish while Tanzi is eating. (Mocha is her mom! I give her heck for being rude to her mom.) I witnessed an interesting exchange the other day. Each had a treat. I don't know if Mocha buried hers for later which she is likely to do or if Tanzania ate her own and stole Mocha's. Anyway Mocha sat back and gathered her self up, made a "fly by" leap past Tanzania trying to wrench the treat from Tanzi's paws! She did it deliberately twice in a row. She 'd fly by and run around to the other side of the cage then do it again. I was surprised at her aggressiveness. Tanzania seemed to be too but sure didn't give up that treat! I gave Mocha another so that they would settle which they did.

lol, sad that they fight, must have been interesting too watch, lol, ya, one of my devils (still can not tell them apart besides attitude) will sit right ontop of the food dish, the others will try to eat around her, and she just lunges at them, and makes some really loud wierd noises, and if one of them gets ahold of a dried banana slice look out, there will be a small brawl, lol

heehee like pigs at the trough Tino and Tiki are fairly civilized with their feeding dishes, we have one dish that is used for degu food, and another dish i put their fresh veggies in. these dishes they behave with. now the two dishes i use for their gerbil/hamster mix, ::)we-l-l-l-l-l-l, now that's another story--i didn't think two little furries could be so selfish, noisy, growly, keep your mitts outta my dish or i will smack you into next week mean to each other!! although it is kinda funny to watch one run with his favorite lil treat and hide it and then try to steal the same treat from his brother's dish and his brother look up in surprise when he goes to his dish to look for this treat and it's gone! the look on their faces!

a trough would be a great idea for the cage i wanna build, that way, i can make it long enough that all 3 can be selfish, without invading each others feeding area, lol, i will have too look into fabricating a trough....
they just keep squabbling more and more, think i should feed them more? i can already see some pellets that have been stashed (they eat everything but the pellets, and save them for later)
i feed them degu nature food, there are banana y begin tug of war too see who will get too eat it, great fun too watch, lol

Hey Wall86
not sure a trough would work. try a mock up version first. I know with my guys they need to be about 25 cm from each other, backs turned to stop the squabbling! thats a seriously long trough to accomodate that!!!
My guys have had 2 bowls at times to limit the squabbling, now on one thats a dog food bowl so very big! They are going into their newly built cage next week (doing doors at the mo) and will probably have a series of bowls at different points in there!
