My wife and I would love to expand our degu colony, but there are no rescues anywhere close to our location with any degus in, and even the ones that are quite a distance seem to have the degus reserved or rehomed whenever we look.
In an ideal world, we would love to find a reputable breeder rather than risk inbred stock with genetic health problems, but since the degutopia breeders are no longer running there don’t seem to be any, and the last thing we want is to support rodent mills.
Pups would be preferable to, one, increase the likelihood of simpler introductions, and two, give us more time to bond with and train them.
If anybody has any recommendations, or is looking for a home for between one and three female goos, we would greatly appreciate a response. We have two female goos already and are happy to answer any questions.

ntg may have some ideas? Personally, my adoptions have resulted in quite long drives. For Sausage and Spud, I drove from Hampshire to Nottingham, and Snoozy and Sneaky involved a drive from Hampshire to Liverpool!

For Sausage and Spud, I drove from Hampshire to Nottingham, and Snoozy and Sneaky involved a drive from Hampshire to Liverpool! There are just two problems: 1) all of the organised rescues I’ve seen will only rehome the animals within certain areas. 2) We don’t have a car, and I’d consider taking them on more than one train inhumane. We’re still willing to travel a certain distance and would be happy to meet part way.

I will be able to help with transport, if that helps? Have you looked at Raystede? They will also provide an introduction service.

I’ve had a look now - they only have males atm, unfortunately. It also doesn’t specify where they’re willing to rehome to? Do you know if they have specific location criteria?

I don't, but I think they said they do neuter all males that come to them.

We’re still willing to travel a certain distance and would be happy to meet part way. When we got our second batch of 3, the rescue loaded them in a carry-cage, that was inside a big cloth tote bag for covering them to make them feel safe, drove them a short distance to meet hubby at the ferry station, rode the ferry with him (45 minutes), then drove an hour home through mostly winding, hilly, bumpy back roads. They were fine. Came out of the bag and the cage looking eager to explore. For any transport, you just have to set them up right. Make sure the carry cage has a deep pile of hay and some substrate from their own cage so it smells right and doesn't feel open and exposed. Give them a little hut, even just a small cardboard box from snack bars or something, to snuggle in. Some pellets and/or forage as well as the hay. Then put it all in a big box or bag or cover with a towel, so the flashing (sunlight between trees or buildings) while traveling doesn't get to them. Snuggled safely in the dark with good food available, they're fine.

It's also worth bearing in mind that if they have been in a rescue centre, they sort of know when they are being transported to a home, so they are more eager and excited than frightened and nervous. As winic1 says, just make sure they are transported correctly.

Are you looking on the facebook degu rehoming group? I haven't checked on there for ages, but they used to have a decent through flow of degus looking for homes, and you can place a wanted ad. If you can't find any in a rescue, I would think a private rehoming would be your next best bet. There aren't any reputable breeders because there has always been a surplus of degus. I think it's only in the last year or so that Pets at Home have stopped selling degus, so the shortfall is only just appearing. I should think private breeders will start to crop up but where they are going to get proven healthy stock from to breed from I have no idea.

Thank you all for the advice re transportation. I’m not too worried about sitting stationary in one moving vehicle; it’s running around train stations and being pushed and shoved and the risk of not having anywhere to sit with them that worries me (not to mention the possibility of being delayed for potentially hours going by the past two times we have travelled far afield).
Several rescues that I have researched online also specify a rehoming zone that we are outside of, so I’m dubious of how far places will be willing to let their animals travel. One rescue even said that they would have to ‘consider’ the fact that we’re expecting a baby, which I might expect with a dog but not small animals!
And yes, I’m a member of the rehoming group on fb, and there’s nothing appropriate right now.

I have never got Degu from a petshop as so many of them are advertised online by people selling. Most free advertisement sites have lots on.
Locally I have seen lots on preloved and gumtree for example. Xx

Little late to the party here but have you tried contacting forever friends small animal rescue? They're based in Cumbria but might be able to help with travel if they or one of their volunteers is swinging by your way. I'm based in Edinburgh and often go down to Tyne & Wear so depending on if you find something up this way then I'm happy to help with transport at least part of the way.
