Hi, My degu, Degu thinks it is great fun to dig in his food dish, he scatters the food everywhere This means I have to clean around his cage everyday, I have to give him tons of food or he digs it out and gets hungry, and I have to buy food more often than before he did this. Anybody know why he does this, and/or how to fix this. Thanks ahead of time

We have 3 degus, and Milly does this, too. I have no idea why she started this! Food flies EVERYWHERE! At first, we thought it was funny, now it's just weird. After she gets most of it out, her, Lilly and Willy always act as though a scavenger hunt is going on, and rummage through all their bedding finding it! Maybe it's a game, but not if it doesn't get eaten once it's out of the dish! That little stinker!

My two seem to delight in lifting their plastic food dish out of it's hole in the shelving unit and dumping the food out all over the shelf. I was scooping the food back up and putting the dish back into place but they just turned it over once again!. As long as the food doesn't end up peed on they will eventually eat it all. I decided they had plenty of hay so I didn't replace the pellets once they emptied them out until they actually cleaned up (ate) what they had dumped out. They continue this game but do eat most of the food they dump.
I suppose we could eliminate the dumping out of or digging out of the food by hanging those metal feeders with attached food trays on the side of their cages. I have a feeling they enjoy the dump and scavage game though. After all they do scavage for food in the wild. I'm going to leave things as is for now.

I got round this issue by purchasing a ceramic bowl designed for dogs. MUCH larger, with deeper sides, less it tipped out. I also have the bowl at the lowest point in the cage to keep food from falling out so easily. But they still end up with stuff on the floor, this way its a bit less at least.

my bowl is ceramic, but even if i put it in his digging box, he still digs it out, he's crazy, I think I may try just putting a handful in his digging box, just to see if it works

Mine started doing that with one of the brands of food i tried that had little oat hulls in it. They loved them so much more than the normal pellets that they would dig through the whole food bin to get em all. So I switched their food and now i have a little PVC tube 'collar' around the dish making the edges higher and thinking of making an even more secure one by cutting a hole in the side of a vertical pvc tube. This way they will have to reach their heads inside to get food and therefore cant fling it all over the place.
