Hi. My 3 degus have had a sand bath in their cage permanently since I've had them. I replace the chinchilla sand daily because they use it as a toilet. However they have recently started to dig all the sand out of their bowl, leaving nothing! Are they just playing or is there a reason for this?

Yeahhhh, mine does the same thing! But he doesn't have permanent access to the sand bath, so he just ends up scratching the bottom of the tupperware container that I use for the sand. Also, the sides are pretty high, so he never quite flings the sand out! ;D Cute little fellers that they are, they just love to make trouble for their owners

Mine have daily access to their sand too. For a long while I only had to change the sand weekly. About October they started throwing the sand out of the jar and into their cage. They continue to roll about the bedding mixed with the thrown out Chinchilla dust. I worried for a bit but they both look healthy and their coats look fine so I just replace the sand every Friday night. I tried tipping the jar up and wedging a rock under the lip to try to prevent them from throwing the sand out of the jar. They just dug even more vigorously until they managed to kick most if not all of the sand out. I give!!! So be it. Until they look worse for the wear I wont worry about it.
